Question about Aprilaire 400 Humidifier

Aprilaire 400 - Mesh Screen not wet

The mesh screen is not consistantly wet...it's only wet in places... There's enough water running through the system, the water just doesn't drip down in a uniform fashion that makes the entire screen wet. Any suggestions? This did happen after I took it apart and cleaned it and replaced the filter. I put it back exactly as it was, but now the water doesn't seem to drip down evenly enough on the mesh screen. Any ideas?

Same problem here, and it's very frustrating. The entire bottom of the mesh screen is wet, and the two float reservoirs are filled, which turns off the water valve; the furnace keeps running, blowing air through the dry mesh, providing absolutely NO humidification. Since the floats are floating in water, the unit will not turn on. Poor design. Can someone help? -Pal

The left float is an overflow safety shutoff as far as I can tell. I mopped that side dry and the humidifier came on once the right float dropped(water soaked up), These seem to have a design flaw as my filter is never wet but the bottom two or three inches. Even hooked to hot water it takes a long time to push any moisture into house air. Then it shuts off at what the control says is 45% but a hygrometer I have upstairs says it's only 29% up there in the living area. Then the control reads 40% when it has come back on so it doesn't/can't hold the moisture anywhere close to its maximum. Not happy with this machine.

me too; just had this put into my home this last week. I also saw the pad only wet on the bottom 1/3. The humidity never gets up to expected level. Seems like a bad design or pads are not designed as wicks to pull water up to top....

Not happy either. I bought 3 Aprilaire 400 for my house (3 zones). I picked this style since I have attic installation and did not want to run drains. The first night I expected a major air quality improvement but no change in humidity. I have installed humidifiers before so I know the drastic improvement they make. So I watched for a season and still no humidity improvement. Absolutely nothing at all. Same exact observation as you all described. Only the bottom of the media was wet. I'm dissatisfied with Aprilaire 400. Do not buy! Since I installed humidifiers before and understand them I am converting the Aprilaire 400 to work like a Aprilaire 600. I simply unwired the float sensors, removed the floats/lid and using a knife cut some of the plastic cups so the water would drain well. I also cut open the plastic exit port some too so it wont clog from dust globs. I obviously added drains. HUGE RESULTS. On the very first cycle on the humidity in that zone went from 25 to 48. I am watching carefully. -GK

Please help me with a clarification on your idea... Is the 600 equivalent that you've rigged a non-drain solution? or drain solution?

I bought the 400M originally to avoid frozen water in an attic install. (I also ran heat wire along the entire system to avoid frozen water line.)

Black mark on water panel, up or down

Goes up usually. If there is a yellow one it goes up. they usually just mark the top side intended to point upwards. The mesh material has little "u" shaped cups to slow the water from running straight down and out of the drain. Also when you get it going make sure you are not draining more than a liter of water every 5 minutes otherwise you are ready for a new feed tube and orifice to regulate the water flow properly. Good luck!

If i hook my Aprilaire 400 Manual (not auto/digital) humidifier up straight to a 24v wall outlet instead of to the furnace, will it still work correctly? Or does it need to be powered by the furnace to...

Your humidifier is a bypass type. The only voltage needed is 24vac to open the water valve. Air only flows through the humidifier when the furnace blower is running, and the wet pad will add very little humidity if the furnace is not running and heating the air before flowing through the wet pad in the humidifier.
It is best the water valve is only energized when the furnace is running. Some furnaces have a connector on their control boards labeled HUM for this purpose. Test it's voltage when the furnace is running because some will output 110vac instead of 24vac you need.

Water panel not getting wet

Is there 24 volts at the solenoid valve when blower motor is running? If there is water at the inlet side of valve then either the solenoid is bad or it is not receiving 24 volts.

Aprilaire 700 never shuts off

Thanks for your question,
Sounds to me like you have a bad solenoid valve in your Humidifier, this will need replaced, the solenoid is supposed to open and close when there is a call for humidity only when the furnace is running, then when the proper amount of humidity is sensed by the humidistat, then will it shut off, with the solenoid not working it will let water flow through like an open faucet, the solenoid is the componet that the 1/4in copper tubing connects to at the humidifier, has two wires running from it, you will need to shut the power off before changing this out, also shut the water off at the valve at the other end of the 1/4in copper line, or you might get soaked, please be careful when installing the new solenoid, making sure the water line connection is secure, or you will have leaks, hope this was helpful, please leave a rating, thanks again for your question,

Humidity too low

I corrected the problem...RH is rising nicely!! Installed by "professionals" on my Trane XV90....I redid their wiring and now have the following setup...

600A water supply coming from hot water line.
Removed orifice inside incoming feed tube.
control incoming water flow from saddlevalve on hot water supply ( make sure its a nice solid flow, no drips, but no "force" too it either)..enough to insure entire evaporator unit is wet and water is slightly flowing out of bottom to drain.

I also have it wired to run when ever the furnace blower is on. Heat or no heat. XV90 is variable speed, and by doing this the 600a is always adding moisture, until it reaches correct RH%

Also, I disconnected the outdoor temp sensor. I went to Radio Shack and bought a 47K ohm resistor ( 1/2 watt....4 pack for 99 cents). Installed that in place of outdoor sensor...now runs in manual mode. Have unit currently set to number 5.

Aprilaire 600 doesn't seem to be running at all

check list
1.check the clamp on the pipe where water line connects
is the hole clogged (water turned off)wont take long
2.Is water flowing all the way to resevoir after turnnig water on
loosen line at reservoir
3.jiggle float water should enter the reservoir inlet to float valevel
somestime cake up,clean float off
4.Remove pump cap clean impeller and standpipe
5.clean reservoir,and close everything up

Usually the hole in the pipe is clogged up in step 1 or the float is sticking if there is no evidence of water in the reservoir

Not getting enough humidity in the air

There are 3 things to check on the humidifier. Check the metal mesh screen, is it wet after the humidistat is call? If it is dry the water solenoid my not be opening or the nozzle is plugged. The circulating fan blows air through the wet screen to add humidity. Does the fan spin when the humidistat is calling? There is an intake and exhaust on the humidifier. Check that the metal was cut out properly when the humidifier was installed to allow air to feely circulate?
