Compact Flash Card Problem

Dear Expert,
Hello, My Archos 80gb has been my pride and joy and I have looked after it well. The main reason why I bought it was to download photos out in the field. My need is getting greater as time goes on but for some reason everytime I put in the CP card, the Archos suddenly turns off! This let me down big time when I was on a shoot in London so I really would like to know what happened. Also on the video demo, it said that it accepted ALL kinds of cards - is this true? If so, this gadget is even more exciting for me. Please can you help

Re: Compact Flash Card Problem

yes the av100 series can read any memory card. you will need an adapter a little like a card reader but with a cf connection to plug into the archos, archos make one but any will do for example this one (picked at random)

regarding your fault, I'm not necessarily saying this has happened to yours but its a relatively common problem.
I would upgrade the firmware and try as many cards as you can.

To see if it is a mechanical fault (board flexing and causing the problem apposed to the card drawing too much power or the hard drive drawing too much power as they tend to do when getting old and the memory card pushing it over the edge) with the board insert the card first then power up the archos and see if you have a greater success

I have never seen this problem specifically but I have seen many of the high capacity av400 mother boards develop bad contacts which cause it to shut down. It often happens after a battery has failed (which usually means its swollen and bent the mother board) with the higher power requirements (of the higher capacity models over the 20gb version) they also run far hotter which could also contribute to mother board failure.

So if its happening on all your cards not just one it very much sounds like the mother board is flexing as you insert it and causing a problem or the hard drive may be on its way out. I would check the battery for swelling, although it may be a bit late for this one if it has already. I have spent many hours re-soldering these boards (I've many in the scrap bin) and never managed to recover one.

Give me a shout if you need any further help
best of luck

I got an Archos 605 80G and it is off warranty now. I like it but consider giving up on it if it cost too much to fix. recovery code 102 System is damaged message. Before this I heard some clicking noise...

If you have nothing to lose, I would consider opening the unit up. I could almost bet it is one of those players with a MicroDrive, just like the iPod. The MIcroDrive is a small HDD with exactly the same shape and connections as a Compact Flash Card. It should be easy to replace.

2 options
1. Back to Archos
2. Replace the battery yourself I ordered mine from HK from the web site BatteryUpgrade. co. uk for about £24 - If you search on Utube there is a video showing you how to change the battery on smaller 605's

Downloading pictures from a memory card

Generally card readers will either come with a built in driver, or it would come with a driver disk. You may need to visit the website of the card reader to check for downloadable drivers is possible.

Pocketstudio 5

A CF card is a compact flash memory card. It's rectangular and has two rows of holes along one side which fit over the connector pins when you slide the card into its socket. Compact flash cards can be bought from electronics or photographic shops, and some department stores. They are not expensive but these days they are usually 1Gb and up. The TASCAM Pocketstudio 5 can only format up to 128Mb so most of a modern card is not used but the card will still work.

Won't play anything on youtube.

I figured it out. (Or accidentally fixed it) First I reset the temp files

Main menu>System>Repair and Formating Tools> Clear temporary system files and cashe
This didn't erase any of my content... though I did lose my extra favorites links.

Then I happened to open the browser and check the settings there. I noticed that "flash content" was disabled. I fixed that, and it works. (As sad as it sounds, I don't think I needed to erase the temp files. But it works nonetheless.)
