The laser it's self isn't what you want to clean - it's the lense. I recommend purchasing a CD laser lense cleaning kit from Best Buy. Usually the cleaner looks like any other disk, but it has a small cleaning cloth on it. You load the disk into the machine as you would any CD and the CD player tracks the laser and reader assembley to the position where the small piece of cloth is. As the cloth passes, it wipes the lense clean.
If you must clean the lense manually, I suggest using a Q-Tip and some isopropal rubbing alcohol. Dip the Q-Tip into the isopropal alcohol, and then press the swab of the C-Tip against the inside of the alcohol bottle to remove any excess alcohol from the Q-Tip so you don't have excess alcohol drip down into the laser assembley. CAREFULLY, GENTLY wipe the lense with the Q-Tip, using circular motion. After about 15 - 20 passes with the wet end of the Q-Tip, turn the Q-Tip around and wipe the lense with the dry clean end of the Q-Tip to remove any excess alcolhol and to prevent any residue that may accumulate as a result of the alcolhol drying. Again I stress being gentle because the lense rides in a magnetic field as part of it's focusing function and if you press the lense down too hard, you will damage the focusing coils and the unit will no longer be able to focus onto the disk and won't be able to read anything. Just be gentle, and good luck.
