Try to check if you have installed the dvd player correctly.
If it is installed properly then follow this steps :
1. click start > control panel > add/remove programs
2. click the DVD player's title from the list of installed softwares/programs
3. uninstall the dvd player software/program
4. click start > all programs > compaq/ HP tools > application recovery. Insert the right recovery CD-ROM if necessary
5. Once you have done this there would be an application recovery window that would appear. make sure you are going to select the DVD player
6. after complete reinstallation of the DVD player restart the computer and then try to play DVD again

May be a DVD codec issue. Try using vlc to play dvds....

click start control panel,administrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll to cd/dvd rom drives right click properties then properties again then tick enable cd digital cd audio for this cd rom device or scroll to dvd regions select the no _ for your specific area

Acer aspire 3690, my cd-rom will play movies, audio and some old games can be read but mostly refuses to read most of my game disks now, any ideas??

Try an external DVD drive that you can connect to your USB port. The drive you have in the laptop either has a dirty laser lens, which you can carefully clean with a "Q" and alcohol, or the laser itself may be going out. The drive can be replaced. You mentioned you have a cd-rom. If you can play movies (DVD) it is more likely a DVD drive instead of a cd-rom. CD-ROMs can only read data or music.

I'm trying to install a PC-DVD Game to my LG CD-ROM CRD-8521B, It plays CD's but wont play DVD's of any sort. Really need help...

The CD rom is limited to CD's. In order to read a DVD, you will need to install a DVD rom. My suggestion is to get an external DVD Burner - i just bought a Samsung slim external DVD burner that reads / writes CD's and DVD's.
You will have no luck ever reading a dvd in a cd rom.

CD-ROM drive doesn't acknowledge DVD-ROM, what's wrong?

CD-ROMs dont play dvd becuase they are not designed to read dvd.

If a dvd drive for your model is not available, you can buy an external usb dvd drive.
That should solve your problem

Dvd-cdrom plays music-cd.Not dvd-cd :No Valide Drive/Disc Found

Simply change the ROM to DVD RW drive since this is an old PC and now days nobody uses a dvd rom but a dvd writer. It will be worth it since it can do all the functions and is also more hardy........sodeep
