Try to connect the receiver to a tv via the monitor out from the receiver to the tv. you may be able to see the OSD (on screen display of your settings) change the function on that to turn on the front display. alternatively look on your remote to see if you can turn up the light of the front display.

if these don't work possible that the light of the display has blown.

good luck

I don't have the manual for this receiver and I would like to hook up my hd tv to it. How do I acquire the user's manual? Thanks, jmp

Use a search engine for "Onkyo TX-SR501 manual"??

Hint: retrevo has it.

You might also hunt for the TV manual as IT is a player in the scenario, too.

Receiver does not power on. standby not on either. receiver is the onkyo tx-sr501

The standby light should be on. If it is not, then check the main fuse. WIth the unit unplugged, remmove hte top cover and check the fuse by the line cord. If that is ok, then you will need to check the primary winding on the standby transformer. That transformer has a thermal fuse internally located and that sometimes gets blown due to a power surge. If you do not have the equipment to test this, get a detailed estimate from a local servicer. The standby transformer usually costs arounf $25 or so.

The display on my Onkyo TX-SR 803 is blank does not light up. Everything is functioning properly. Volume light is lit. Any suggestions.

This is a common fault, I got in touch with Onkyo and they referred me to a company called GenServe based in Swindon.  My receiver was under warranty and I live near Swindon.  The company was very helpful and fixed the problem in a couple of hours!  It's worth calling them on 01793 886333. www.genserve.co.uk

Optical sound

I think what I might do is use an optical splitter: http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Bi-Directional-Optical-Toslink-Splitter/dp/B0002MQGR2, does anyone have any experience with this?
