GE REFRIGERATOR PFS22SBSBSS SHUTTING DOWN

REFRIGERATOR SECTION SHUTS OFF ABOUT EVERY TWO WEEKS
WHILE THE FREEZER GETS COLDER. IT WILL STAY OFF FOR ABOUT
4 TO 24 HOURS AND THEN WILL OPERATE NORMALLY UNTIL THE NEXT EPISODE. IT IS LESS THAN A YEAR AND A HALF OLD. IT
STARTED DOING IT AT A LESSER FREQUENCY AFTER ABOUT 6 MONTHS. I FOUND A BROKEN PLASTIC LATCH ON ONE OF THE DOORS AND ASSUMED THE DOOR WAS LEFT OPEN. NOW I KNOW THAT IS NOT THE PROBLEM.

THERE ARE TWO WHITE PLASTIC LATCHES AT THE TOP OF

EACH DOOR WHICH KEEP THE DOOR CLOSED WHEN THE OTHER DOOR IS OPENED

  • vl_klette Sep 09, 2008

I have had my GE Profile French Door Freezer on the bottom with the same model number for just about 1 year and 7 months. The same latch on mine broke as well, the left door plastic latch at the top, and now my freezer is working but the fridge keeps shutting down. Unfortunately, I have tried to look for the fridge on the GE website and there is no refrigerator with that matching model number to be found. Is there any one out there that knows what may be going on?

We have the same problem - left top latch broke and we cant id the part. We found http://www.repairclinic.com/SmartSearch/... that INCLUDES the latch but it appears to be part of the gasket.

My GE French door fridge PFS22SBSBSS has had same latch problem. Left door latch broke under warranty and GE replaced entire left door. Now right door latch is broken and under extended service plan I am told that it is not really important and does not need to be repaired. But I read that Fred says the latch "keeps the door closed when the other door is open" I believe I need it!!

I have the exact same problem. The right door was the first to go, and now the left has broken. This is a design flaw. Should be fixed n/c as far as I am concerned. What is the least expensive way to resolve this issue?

I too have had the top plastic latch break. A extremely poor design incorporating a hinge on a fixed point screw. We had it fixed under the extended service contract. Prior to the repair person arriving, two, not one, full sets of door gaskets and hinge assemblies were shipped to us. The repair person broke one due to his mis-use of tools. The top latch can only be replaced with the entire door gasket assembly, and he installed both in 15 min. Now the freezer handle is falling off. We installed a GE Profile Stainless kitchen in 2006 and all the units have failed. My wife literally cries over the cost for such poor design and manufacturing.

Are ice maker stopped working, so we need to reprogram it

*Check your warranty. You should call vendor for service.
*** The following is for information only.***
* I've had this problem a lot with my old fridge. Water line works but no ice.
* Check if the "Ice Full" leaver is in the down (no ice) position. Some ice makers will lock the leaver (a stiff wire) in the full position to manually shut off ice maker. Make sure it swings up and down when ice tray is empty.
* Sometimes when the tray is left full of ice for a week or more then the tube feeding water will freeze up. Defrosting the freezer on a regular basis will help. A quick fix is to pour warm water in the ice maker section (where the ice is formed). This will help melt the clogged pipe and also make some ice while your waiting. You may have to do this several times. But at least you have ice.
* This (freezing up) may also be caused by the freezer set too cold. The temperature dial should be in the middle. But turning it colder and colder over time will cause ice to build up and prevent foods from freezing properly (thus turning the dial down colder.) Once your maxed out on the dial. You will find the freezer gets warm and things get covered in frost crystals.
* Transfer food to another refrigerator and perform a complete defrost by leaving it unplugged and the door open (freezer section).
* Frequently check and dump water at bottom of fridge. Clean the dust on coils while down there.
* A fan blowing into the freezer section helps. (Do NOT use a heated fan as it will warp the plastic and overpressure the refrigerate.)
* Once defrosted (+4 hours). Power up the freezer and set the temperature dial to mid point and the freezer diverter to middle or normal setting. Don't put the food back in yet. Wait till the freezer gets down to normal freeze temp (about 0 to 10F)
* Move freezer back in place (if you moved it to access plug) then slowly put back the food. Try not to cram stuff in. Leave space for air to flow freely around items.
* Final, Call for service anyway and have them perform yearly service. Check your warranty.

Why does The freezer side stays cold but the refrigerator side gets warm

Your problem is more than likely a defrost issue. There is ice building up in the freezer coils and when it gets blocked with ice the cold air cant blow into the fresh food section. When you shut it off the ice melts and it gets cold again for a few days. remove the freezer back panel and check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. if they check OK then check the defrost timer. It is best to replace all three components at the same time. This way you will be starting out with new components rather than one failing then the other.

I have a GE Profile PDS22MCR bottom freezer. The freezer is getting colder and the fridge is getting warmer....... What could this be?

your damper assy isn't opening to allow cold air from the freezer up into the refrigerator, its located on the rear wall in the refrigerator compartment, you need to make sure theres a fan running in the freezer, then if so you should feel cold air blowing up in the refrigerator compartment, remove this panel and see if its shut,if no air is felt then the damper door is either broken or jammed shut or if its o.k.,then your control board in the rear of the unit could be defective not letting power to the damper door or even on of your thermistors in the side walls of the refrigerator that monitor temps in the refrigerator and freezer could be defective

My GE TFX30PP is constantly running and doesn't turn off. The freezer is very cold but the frig side isn't cold enough. A repair guy put in a new "cold contol" sensor but it didn't help.

This is a very common issue, If the freezer compartment is cold and making ice the
problem is simply airflow from the freezer into the refrigerated section.
Typically when one senses the refrigerator is warm they max out the settings
on both dials the thermostat with its 1-10 settings as well as off for the compressor.
This controls the compressor and temperature.
The additional setting or dial is for colder freezer or refrigerator as well , However
it simply opens or closes a flapper door between the freezer and refrigerator boxes.
When that dial or setting is maxed , it closes and makes the freezer colder, yet leaves the refrigerated section starved for sufficient airflow to maintain a cold box in the refrigerated section.
Just set the dial that does not turn the compressor off to the middle setting.
One can leave the thermostat that does control the compressor in the max setting , just not the colder freezer setting, If you notice colder isnt colder refrigerator, Its actually colder freezer, A common issue found on 25% of all refrigerator calls a simple setting adjustment.
Its easy to think that maxing out the settings makes for a colder refrigerator, it doesnt, it makes a colder freezer and warm rerigeration section.
If a freezer is making ice, theres nothing wrong with the unit other than airflow setting.
I would also clesan the condenser coils off.

Refer is not cooling, but freezer works OK. This happened after a 3 hour power outage.

If the freezer box is good and making ice thats dry, its an airflow issue. The reefer box section is reliant upon the freezer box section for its cold air, it has no evaporator of its own. There are 2 dials or controls one says 1-10 and has an OFF position that will shut off the compressor. The other says COLDER/WARMER and will not shut down anything except the flapper door that regulates the amount of air allowed to migrate into the reefer box from the freezer box. The normal reaction when finding a warm box is to max out both settings! 19 rather than 1 and COLDER rather than WARMER, setting. Which sounds correct, except the COLDER means colder freezer box, not reefer box, thus closing down even further the amount of air available to the reefers box. Sounds crazy and really makes a customer mad to pay $75 for a guy to turn the COLDER to WARMER and be done! Many question its accuracy , yet learn soon when the refers cold again. or they remove the back panel to see for themselves and operate the setting to see the flappers workings.

Crisper drawers are feezing vegetables.

look down at the bottom crisper and there should be an air control that lets more or less air in from the freezer section. close this control down so that most of the air stays in the freezer. some models may say meats(colder) and vegetables(warmer).

some models the control in the down position opens up the vent more allowing it to get colder and in the up position closes the vent down more allowing less cold air into the refrigerator. you can remove the crisper and experiment with the control.

Might just be a freezer thermostat gone bad by sticking in an open position. If that's the case you will be out of control in temp settings. Hope this has helped!!BB

GE refridgerator fan speed changes constantly

I will try to answer your question . Your refrigerator had 3 thermistors in the refrig side , and 2 in the freezer side . These thermistors , send resistance messages to the main control board , mounted on the back of the refrigerator . If say #1 thermistor tell the board , I need to be colder , then the board will tell the damper ( small vent in the top of refrig section ) , to open . If the #2 thermistor tells the board , I need to be colder , then the board tells the fan to speed up , to get more air to the refrigerator section . #3 thermistor , works with the turbo cool switch , turning the fan to a high speed also . If the thermistors tell the board , we're all fine , then the fan will slow down , but still circulate to make/keep the freezer colder . If the freezer thermistors say , we're ok also , then the refrigerator will cycle off , until a thermistor asks to be cooler again . The fan works off D C voltage , in which fan speed is regulated (faster or slower) , by the thermistors "talking" to the control board .

Freezer section is cold, but the refrigerator section is not

set to colder refrigerator ... not colder freezer!! the fridge is reliant upon air migrating into the area from freezer side! if you peg both controls to max , you get a warmer refrigerator , but colder freezer, the control that does not operate the compressor is the setting i mean, it usually says .. for coldest and everyone pegs it and its a common cause for a service call and people cant believe it, if you cant tell which is which set both to middle! evfen at warmest setting the freezer should still make ice and thats the test for freezers state1 can it make ice!
