I was experiencing a very annoying playback issue where the touch LCD would turn blue & start skipping footage.
... now it will not power up... the camera is totally dead! (confirmed not a battery issue)
Has anyone else had this problem?

You can choose your default power up mode in the settings menu. If it's already setup as F (film), then you're holding the power button too long when turning on the camera (if you hold the power button, it will turn on in the next mode after the default power up mode). Try just quickly pressing the power button - this will remedy that one if your default power up mode is already set to F (otherwise, go into settings menu and change it to F).
A couple of my friends' computers don't have the RAM/video card, or whatever is needed to playback HD footage smoothly. There's a ton of data transferring to playback the HD video/audio, and many computers (especially if they're not new, but even many new ones) aren't up to the task. Try playing it from the camera to your TV. Does it play smoothly? If so, it's the computer. This doesn't effect videos you upload to YouTube, etc, it is just frustrating and annoying that it doesn't play smooth and makes editing slower as well. Check out the support page on gopro's website - they have FAQ's, Troubleshooting, etc... tons of helpful info there. Also, most of us who have used gopro gear for a while now are usually happy to help when we see a question we know something about.

This is because of low light and low frame rates in the camera. It records the sound on time but the picture delays. In the camera's video menu, choose a higher frame rate to help this a little. Honestly though, If you want to shoot better video get a video camera.
