I have a Pentax Superprogram SLR approx. 20 years old. The LED just stopped working. No reading inside or at the top. I've tried all settings and still no reading. I've put in new batteries, tried cleaning battery compartment with a pencil eraser. I've taken it into an authorized repair shop. Their feeling is it's a circuit problem and they aren't even going to attempt a repair.

Does the film advance lever lock in place when the lever is returned ? if not, the lock spring broke. This is a common weak point in the ME Super. the camera must be partially disassembled to be repaired. get a cost estimate first. there are no new parts for this model Pentax.
Any Pentax K-mount lens will fit any Pentax DSLR. The DSLR will fire the shutter. There is a menu setting (RTFM) which allows the use of older lenses, but you will lose some of the automation (again RTFM). Remember to allow that the effective focal length when using a "film" lens on a DSLR body goes up by 50%.
A standard 50mm lens becomes a 75mm equivalent, but stays a large aperture.
Yes, the ME super has an electronic shutter that works in conjunction with the LEDs. Purchase some fresh S76 button cells, A76 will work, but the will not last as long. Make sure the battery cover is corrosion free and install the batteries so both cells face positive toward the cover.
Take lens off to check the lens/light-meter coupler situated inside the lens mount at the top part of the mount at 'one o'clock' . First see if it moves freely ,clock wise. Then -with the lens off- look through the view finder while you activate the coupler : moving it should make the l.meter lights move up and down. If you are not getting any joy the connection between the coupler and the board needs re-soldering ( dry joints ) : remove top cover and resolder two blue wires on left hand side of the board . This should do the trick.
Set your camera to B and release the shutter ( camera will work in this mode without batteries ) if you can wind ok and release shutter fine then all you need is new batteries.
If however your camera is not working when set to B then it is either the shutter or the transport mechanism that need looking at.
From experience ( have repaired 100s of Me-supers ) it is likely that your shutter needs attention : rubber components ( and foam rubber ) inside the shutter ( and the mirror box locking mechanism especially ) have perished and need replacing.
It is possible that the mirror is stuck in th "up" position. You should be able to fire the shutter as you say on the 125x setting with no batteries.
