Question about Dell Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

My Laptop Pavilion dv4000 keyboard keys locked

Please i need help in fixing my Laptop problem.I just discovered that the keyboard was not responding. The scroll lock light is on but all effort to turn it off proved abortive.Non of the keys is responding. Can someone tell me what i can do to fix this problem? I'm eagerly waiting. MY keyboard has a few lights on at the top on certain buttons which have to do with music, but the actual keys that you would use to types are incapable of use. I can tell there is a connection between the keyboard and computer through this, but perhaps the keys are locked? I've tried to troubleshoot the problem, but the hardware doesn't show up as listed... it's very confusing.

Have you removed all power (AC adaptor and battery) for several minutes. Sometimes it may also help to hold the power button in for 10 seconds while all power is disconnected. Then plug back in and start computer.

if you have 3 keys on the keyboard not working, then you'll need a replacement. You can find keyboards on EBay for about $20 to 30

Several keys do do nothing when used.

Could of spilled something on the keyboard or there are some tiny objects that fell in under the keys that make the keys not respond. If that does not work, please let us know more about the buttons. ie: The button wiggles a lil or the button does not feel like the others when pressed. If you are comfortable with this. Try taking the button from the laptop and inspect whats under it. Also let us know if all the buttons stopped all at once or did it start with one and followed by with the rest that are not working. Thanks for reading and I hope you get the problem fixed =)

I have HP DV4000 has a bright problem but cant get fn keys to work

Reinstall all drivers for your laptop from the HP.Com website. If the function keys still don't work, you may have a defective keyboard.

Turn the laptop off, then take the laptop keyboard off (usually takes 1 screw - bottom of case, and a few sliders, top of keyboard). And then there will be a couple of thin cables which are connected to the motherboard. There is a sliding connector which holds these on. Push this up, slide the cable in, puch it back down. Do for both cables if you have 2 (keyboard and tracking pad/pointing stick). Reinstall keyboard and try it out.

If that doesn't fix it, replace the keyboard with one from ebay.

If the keys are not responsive, then you will need to replace the laptop. Your laptop manufacturer should be able to sell you a replacement part as well as instructions on replacing it. In the mean time, you can plug in a regular keyboard to the laptop to get full keyboard functionality.
