Problem for Adobe Photoshop CS (23101764) for PC

Brush tool will not paint over layer mask

I created a blurred layer then added a black layer mash by holding down Alt and clicking on Add layer mask. I would normally set the foreground cokour to white and paint over the areas I want to soften but brush tool will not paint over layer mask.
