I have a 55" Toshiba Rear Projection TV and it works great for 30 minutes or so and then it just turns off. The picture is prefect as is the color...Then will not turn back on again, just flashes a red light..If I unplug for several hours and then plug it in and turn it on, it will possibly work for another hour or so....I called a Toshiba recommended repair technican and he came and took the electronics out and supposedly repaired the unit, believe he said it was probably the convergence problem, nad that he did not need to take the whole set...Well he repaired the unit and just recently replaced the repaired chassie and if anything it is worse now than before...the unit came on and turned off again this time after 1 minute or so...then the lights flash red...He wants to take the whole TV now to his shop to repair it..estimates are $400+ Any suggestions as to what I should do??? Is the unit, which is 10 years old worth repairing?? We were O.K. with the $400 estimate but now am worried that it is a scam. He saids that he will repair but that I will only get another 2-3 years out of it anyway..Bob Boutin

- Got anyone in the Chicagoland area that can replace the ballast parts??
As your instincts have told you this MR.Techie is trying to rip you off. I think what you have is a faulty ballast. A ballast is a part in the projection tv that supplies power to the lamp. If the lamp is drawing more power than normal, then the ballast turns off and resets itself after a while. That's why the set works for a while before turning itself off again. A faulty ballast may reset even though the the lamp assembly is drawing normal power. You may also need to replace the lamp if it doesn't resolve the issue. It is a relatively inexpensive part but you will need the techie's assistance to replace it. Should cost you around 100-150$ for the repair.
Feel free to post back if you need more info. Sai.

If it is Toshiba 55H70 then it is three CRT (red-green-blue) rear projection TV and 3 CRT rear projection TV does not have any ballast or lamp. The TV Tech is saying right, it would be your decision to get it repaired or not.

My tv is a Toshiba 55H71 but this is the closest number i found to it. We are having problems with ours having lines across the screen and the longer it is on the worse it gets. There are only two that run verticle and many that run horizontal. What can we go to fix this?
