I was wondering if it is just a case of unplugging wires from the back of the dvd rom and connecting them to the new dvd rw.

Nope unlsess you got a new ROM that is SATA then your you sound be good. Just mind the jumper setting that where on it

No. Unfortunately. Different manufacturers use different interfaces internally for their drives. Even different drives from the same manufacturer cannot be "swapped" in this manner.
