Windows XP Unsuccessful on Start Up

When I turn on my Acer 3000 laptop, I get a black screen that reads:

... Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change my have caused this...

and then it asks me to restart in safe mode, last known good configuration or start normally. NONE of these options work. The computer just keeps restarting itself and coming to the same black screen.

I pulled the restore disks that came with my computer and started to reinstall all my stuff, but - see, at some point my cd-rom drive STOPPED reading data disks, so I had to buy an external cd-rom drive. I insert the first disk into the external CD - rom and it reads fine, but when I'm prompted to install the next one, it wants to read from my laptop cd-rom drive NOT the external one.

Ugh.

So - I have a copy of Windows XP, figured maybe I could just reinstall (repair) with that. I put the disk in the external CD-rom and all seems to work fine UNTIL I get an error code "0-000007b" or something like that which (upon investigation) is a boot drive error.

I have been told I might need a new hard drive, emphasis on MIGHT, and if I get one, how the heck will I install WinXP on it if I get a boot drive error? Will replacing the hard drive eliminate the boot drive error?

What if I just replace the internal CD-rom drive, so I can reinstall the disks right from the laptop as opposed to the external drive which doesn't seem to be working???

What if I just toss the computer altogether? ;)

Thank you so much for your help... now, let's see if I'm crafty enough to find that battery! ;)

  • Kdaniels67 Dec 31, 2007

Found the battery, removed it, waited a few minutes, replaced the battery and powered the machine back up. It immediately took me back to the same black screen, so I clicked "start windows normally" and when the "Acer" screen came up, I hit F2 to enter BIOS set up. Nothing appeared different, I was not prompted to "set best defaults"... I truly appreciate your assistance, but I guess, I'll have to break down and have a "pro" look at it. :(

This is a great site. Keep up the good work.

No you just need to fix your bios problem, if you dont have the manual take the battery out of the motherboard that keeps power to the bios keep it out for a few minutes put it back in then turn it on it should go to bios automatically then just go to set best defaults for ststem hit y for yes then hit enter and it should take off fine if it dont then you need to take it to a pro who can reset it for you manually or reprogram it that would be cheapest for you without trashing it.

some times the bios chip fails and cannot be repaired but that is rare they are usually reprogrammable i set them up through a server with a custom start up program that i designed it makes systems boot faster. and run better with the changes i make in CMOS. so just shop around and get the best price. on the repair.

ok after you start it up hold F8 and the boot menu should come up if you pick the dvd drive and it still goes to the acer screen you dont have a bootable copy of XP try making a bootable pen drive (google it it is pretty easy) and after you boot to the pen drive just switch to the dvd drive and install win xp

This is generally the indication that the hard drive has failed and needs replaced. Replace the hard drive, format it, and install a new operating system and you'll be set.

Acer Aspire 5050 Won't Boot.

Your problem could be windows vista isnot installed properly
i assume in the beginning, your laptop come with windows xp.
if you want to go back to windows xp, you can still use alt+f10, as long as you don't delete the recover partition.
Just boot and press Alt+F10, it'll give you recover screen.

Laptop Wont Boot

Does it sound like it's starting up at all? Is the problem that only the screen turns blank? You might have just disabled the standard output. Try pressing Fn (bottom left on the keyboard) and the F5 on the top a few times to see if the screen toggles back on. You might also try to run it without the battery, and on the battery only in case it's a faulty battery or power supply that causes the problem. If not, it sounds lsike a serious problem, so if there is any chance of the waranty still being valid I'd call acer support asap.

Acer aspire 3000 dropped on floor. Random startup events

theres a good chance that the hard drive platletes and parking head have been damaged, although this is not a huge problem to replace, as long as your screen is working ok, then it is worth replacing. you can access it on the underside of the casing, in the largest compartment, remove all screws and the hard drive will be held in with more screws.
