There are 4 specific points that you should check for leaking on a 240. the first is to take the upper compartment or radio out of the dash and look athe the heater core behind it. They tend to fail when they are old. Then check the 3 hoses from the firewall. 2 enter the head and block, the 3rd goes to a pipe (check that also) that runs next to the block, into the water pump. then, check the pump around the pulley area. I've had one leak out the front without dripping out of the drain hole. The last point you need to check is the top of the water pump. The top seal against the cylinder head is a pressure fit, it is installed by prying up on the pump and jamming it tight while tightening the bolts. It's goofy, and they tend to leak. If they all check out, just re-seal the pump.

How many gallons of coolant does the northstar engine hold?

Coolant should be mixed in most cases to a 50% concentration, meaning one gallon of undiluted coolant will provide two gallons of diluted coolant. Most engines will hold 2-3 gallons of coolant mix. I normally purchase two gallons of undiluted coolant. I pour the first gallon of undiluted coolant into the radiator, then fill the empty bottle with water and add that to the radiator as well to make it a 50% mix.. Then, I pour half the second bottle of undiluted coolant into the empty coolant bottle, and then top both off with water to make two gallons of 50% mix. I then add coolant to the radiator as needed until full, keeping the remainder for topping off later as air purges itself form the system.

Heater stopped working loss of coolant and rough Idle

I had a similar experience. Finally the car started overheating. Turned out the thermostat went bad and the radiator blew a leak. Had those replaced. Runs great.

Volvo quit running

If the smoke was white, then you've probably blew the head gasket. Check for coolant in the oil as well as the coolant level. Coolant in the oil and low coolant in the radiator or reserve bottle combined are good indication of blown head gasket.

How much coolent in 1996 mercury mastique I live in florida just flushed rad

Use a rule of thumb, with a empty radiator add one gallon coolant and the rest water,if you want to add more coolant go ahead, its when there is not enough coolant or just plain water is where the problem begins,1 radiator 1 gallon coolant or even more.

What type of antifreeze can i use?

if you are just adding antifreeze to the cooling system you are safe to use a 50/50 mix that you can get at any auto part store. if you are adding antifreeze to the system after doing a repair ( empty system ) then you will want to get a full ( 100% ) strength antifreeze and add water to it to the correct water/antifreeze ratio depending on the air temp of the area of the world you live in.

Last night I was driving my 1996 volvo 850 and white smoke came out from under the passenger side of the hood. I added coolant because the resevoir was empty. The coolant bubbled a lot. This afternoon I...

it could be a blown head gasket or could be a stuck thermostat causing the coolant to bowel and the only place to go is out the resevoir bottle pull your oil dipstick check to see if you can see little water bubbles in the oil on the stick this kinda gives you an idea if the head gasket is blown because most of the time the coolant will mix with the oil if the thermostat is stuck close it will lead to a blown head gasket if you dont get it taken care of also you may have a slow leak in the water pump and once the level gets low its going to bowel whats left and the stem will come out the over flow tube on the bottle

Coolant leak/ squeak/ no heat

The squeak you hear is because coolant is leaking onto the belt making it slip and that is the squeak you hear. The reason your heater isn't working is because the coolant is low enough that it isn't able to circulate through the heater core and heat your car. If you are losing a gallon of coolant a week, I would guess you either have a coolant hose with a leak or your water pump is going bad and starting to leak. It could be getting weak which also would cause you to not have heat. I would get it fixed soon before the pump shells out on you and your engine overheats which could cause more damage to the engine.

Good luck

Cooling sysem leak

Leak found at heater.  Most of coolant added in attempts to locate leak was retained on the floor of the passenger compartment --- hence the disappearing coolant phenomenom. About 5 gallons of water were obtained with wet vac of region under floor carpet. Thanx to those who considered the problem.
