Question about Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine

1 Answer

Rancilio Silvia leaks around group head. Gasket seems fine.

I have a Rancilio Silvia that used to be leak free and, given the right grind, would pull a good double shot of espresso in 25 seconds or so. It's now leaking around the edges, and I made sure the grind was the same, and the filter was clean. Also cleaned the gasket that forms the seal with the filter, which doesn't seem to be hard nor cracked at all. And I recently decalcified the machine. I remember this problem happened before when I was tightening the portafilter too much, but I haven't been doing that and now it's leaking water more and more. There's no significant water collecting above the coffee grinds, so I don't think it's ground too fine. What should I check next, or what sort of repair would I need?

HI
You need to change the group head gasket. They only last about 1 year and then should be changed. Get 2 because they usually fail on Friday and you have a party on Saturday.
The gaskets get hard from the heat and don't form to the filter any more so they leak.
When you get the new gasket.
Empty everything out of the machine (water tank, drip tray, etc.) Turn the machine upside down on a towel. This way you can see what your are doing.
Remove the filter screen and diffuser from the brew head. The black O-ring is your gasket. Carefully pry it out. Clean the opening good before you install the new gasket. Insert the gasket with the beveled side down (on the inside edge of the O-ring is the bevel). Once you have the gasket in place, use the portafilter to finish seating the gasket.

Why won't my portafilter stay engaged once the water starts dripping? It flies off and sprays coffee grounds, and this started last week. Stays in place only if I wrestle with the filter handle.

It is possible that the grind you are using is too fine and causing so much back pressure that the portafilter is moving, also possible that the group gasket installed need to be replaced, I have also seen this happen with damaged screens.

My Rancilio Silvia won't pump water out of the head all of a sudden. It had worked for years up to this point

It may be that the 'shower screen' which is a perforated metal disk filter that fits inside the head has reached its use by date.
These can be found and bought on E-bay for about $15 each, make sure you buy a genuine Rancilio replacement, while you are at it, replace the rubber 'group seal' - a rubber ring for pressure sealing the head/arm after filling the arm with grounds - these are a similar price. If you get leaks around the head while making a coffee, the seal is worn out.

My silvia is at least 8 years old and is serviced on a regular basis.

The 'group seal' in the underside of the head that the grounds arm compresses against probably needs replacing. If you unknowingly left a few grounds to dry on the underside of the seal the last time you used the machine, this can be enough to cause a leak the next time around.
If replacing the group seal, replace the 'shower screen' above it as well. Always buy genuine Rancilio parts, you should be able to find both for around $10 - $15 each on Ebay.
There are videos on either You-Tube or Gooble that show how to replace these parts on the Silvia.
Always try to ensure the seal face is cleaned before and after use and the group seal will last longer, but they are actually meant to be replaced whenever necessary, they are not designed to last forever.

Hi there ... When a pull a shot water is leaking out along with the coffee .... Any ideas what to do about this?

The group gasket is either dirty or damaged, first use a toothbrush and clean the gasket if that works you're good if not you will need to get a new group gasket.

When running the machine for a shot of espresso I get water leaking into it. It's a Rancilio Silvia, this occurs with every shot. All I've done is clean the machine.

Time for a new group head gasket and probably all the recommended preventative maintenance.

I have a Rancilio Techna DE two head expresso machine. I need to change the gasket for the head. Water is leaking around the head. How do I change the gasket?

Easiest way is to remove the screw and screen, then using an Awl or ice pick, at a 45° angle, force it into the gasket and lift, leverage will do the rest, and it will most likely come out in chunks. After it is removed clean area to make sure there is no small pieces then insert new gasket.

Leaky head and quick shots

Have a look at the seal for the group handle. I have a different machine but this may of hardened and cracked. I'm sure you can get a replacement, may be hard to remove if it's gone very hard.

Rancilio Silvia Espresso water flows too quickly about 7 seconds

  1. check the coffe filter>> it could be teard up and leaking(check it carefuly it is hard to see sometimes)
  2. check the pressure you get from group. 7 - 9 bar pressure you should get to handle. if it is biger than check by pas valve and adjust the pressure, also check up boiler security valve(security valve for water for coffee)
