Rear Projection Gateway HDTV with DLP,56"

Hi Gurus and Wizes,
I'm about to lose my mind. I bought a 56" Gateway brand RPTV 4 years ago,and now it's making the most annoying humming sound. So loud that it even bleeds through the sets own speakers. I called in a repairman(an HDTV specialist, supposedly) who informed me that the set itself was a Samsung manufactured for Gateway. He also said it was the color wheel that was most likely the problem. He said he'd contact Samsung and get back to me whether he could order the replacement part. Fine. He calls back the next day and says that I may as`well buy a new set! He said on this model that Samsung informed him in order to fix the problem,ALL the inner workings of the set would need to be replaced, resulting in a cost higher than what I had even paid for the set new!
I'm bummed because the picture on the set is still great, and I had just recently replaced the set's lamp---no small charge there either. Can you either verify what he's saying is true,or is there another solution or fix to this problem that wouldn't involve a complete overhaul?

The TV is made by Vizio/Vivitek and the noise is probably from the color wheel. (That's what mine is.) It's a fairly easy replacement for around $80 for the wheel only. It can be replace without replacing the light engine but you have to be careful not to break the block for the ribbon connector from the light engine PCB. That's what I just did. The ribbon pulls out from the block and the block stays there.
    Now I'm looking for both.

4 screws hold the color wheel housing in and 3 screws hold the wheel to the housing. Getting to it is a bit of a challenge if you're not mechanically and electronically proficient. It involves removing the light engine PCB before you can get to the color wheel housing. It will also require bending a metal tab just a bit that is located in front of the housing.

Witzend, hate to be the bearer of bad news but he`s probably talking about the light engine and those dam things run 650-1150 just for the part, also, the last I knew the Samsung engines had been on national back order for the last 10-12 weeks, ( tells you something doesn`t it ) It`s ridiculous that you have to buy the whole light engine to get a new color wheel but that`s the way they do it, good luck, BMW Rider

My 46" Samsung DLP Rear

It's possible that the DLP chip is going bad. I'm not sure how much it would cost to repair it. If you have the part number you can search for it on ebay and probably find it cheap. I couldn't tell you how much it would cost to have someone repair it, or how to do it. I do know that diagnostics typically cost around 100.

That humming sound is a sign that your color wheel is becoming or already is defective. If you don't replace it you might even lose picture in the future since it's part of the light engine system
