The three colors on our set no longer converge. When we do the "flash focus" it goes through the routine but nothing is changed afterward. If we try to do manual convergence nothing moves or changes.

Is the image bow-tie shaped, with red, green or blue fringing effects? If so, one of your convergence amplifiers has gone bad. (Bow-tie: at least one of the three primary colors in the picture goes out to the corners, but the top, bottom and sides are bowed in at the center.)

If it is simple color fringing, with no color grossly misplaced, something has messed up the convergence. This may be caused by a strong magnet near the set (for example, a poorly shielded audio speaker), moving the set so its orientation in the geomagnetic field is altered or its components mechanically shifted (rough handling).

If a convergence amplifier is bad, replace it before doing anything else. If you just have minor fringing, see your owner's manual for instructions on using the remote control to adjust convergence. If it isn't in the owner's manual, you'll need the service manual. Caution: if you try to adjust convergence with a failed convergence amplifier, not only will it not help, but you will have a lot of extra work trying to get it back to normal after you replace the amplifier. Try a small adjustment along one edge of the picture. If one or more of the selected color dots in the convergence pattern won't move, and you are sure you are following adjustment directions, stop immediately and proceed with hardware repair.

Convergence amplifiers are usually marked STK392-nnn where nnn is a specific variant number. Two are used; I usually change both because quite a few people have changed one and had the other die not long afterwards. Sometimes there is a fuse in the power feed to these modules that is also blown. If you change the fuse without replacing the amplifiers, you'll probably waste a new fuse.

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

What is the model number? Can you describe the problem more completely?

A common problem with CRT-based rear-projection TVs is convergence amplifier failure. At least one of the colors will be projected as a bow-tie pattern (goes out to the corners, but not all the way to the top or bottom or sides). If this is your probelm, DO NOT try to adjust the convergence using the service routines. If you do, you will not only accomplish nothing, but you will make a lot of extra work for yourself or your technician after the amplifier is replaced. The convergence amplifier is probably a member of the STK392-xxx series. The xxx is a three -digit number for your particular version. Don't use a different number unless you know it is an upgrade substitute. Buy parts made by name-brand semiconductor manufacturers (e. g., Sanyo) - some of the no-name Chinese copies don't last very long.

On the other hand, if you just have a small amount of color fringing, perhaps because you moved the set, you can tweak the settings using your remote control. The procedure is given in the manual for the set. Be patient and use small adjustments, and keep an eye on the convergence grid pattern as you adjust to make sure it stays rectilinear as you move the color dots together. Adjustments on one part of the picture can change results elsewhere, so expect to spend some time to get the best compromise.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Its the digital convergence unit. If that goes out you will not have any control over the convergence. I have seen many times where the convergence ICs were suspected to be bad, and then after changing the ICs the set still wouldnt converge. the magic focus is controlled by the DCU often the magic focus will work only part way, then other times it will go farther then back to nothing. The DCU is usually suspect if more then 1 color is out.
