I have a Rheem glas fury model 22-40 gas water - leaking

I have a Rheem glas fury model 22-40 gas water heater. I do not know how old it is as I purchased a used home. The water heater is leaking from underneath, not from a side pipe. Any ideas?

Dear Hank McNeal; I have successfully used a "boiler plug" to seal a water heater tank leak in 2007. It was a 100 gallon electric commercial hotel unit. To this day it's still in use. It depends where the leak is located....Predrilling the leak is necessary to be sure the plug will ernguage it's threads into good material... Start as small as possible, then use the best suited plug. they come in an assortment of sizes. Can't locate the year of manufacture of my Rheem Fury Model 29-40S-2

Generally the year of manufacture for Rheem is 3rd and 4th digit of serial number. 06 is 2006, 92 is 1992 etc.
Older gas water heaters are better than new ones, and easier to keep repaired and maintained.

Regardless of age, the key factor is whether tank is rusted, or rusting.
Open drain valve and check if water is rusted.

Replace water heater. You can limp by for a while with rusted heater by turning it on for short periods when you need hot water. Then take time to find best deal on new heater.

I just bought a house, and the water heater instructions posted on the water heater is all covered up by the earthquake straps! The earthquake straps are a requirement in California, I can't remove them....

1) Model 41VR50N is Rheem fury gas water heater.
Look on tank label, the second 2 digits of serial number are year of manufacture.

2) Rheem does not show that specific model number, but has generic manuals for Fury series:

Rheem glas fury water heater rattling

Thermostat may be heating element hotter than normal causing a change in temperature causing the noise. You could try adjusting temp down a little on thermostat. It sounds like it's getting the water very hot and thermostat may not be working correctly.
