Question about Panasonic PT-47WX49 47" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

Panasonic PT-51G50CU This rear projection TV is 10 years old. It was perodically switching itself off and on during viewing and now there is no sound or picture. When we turn it on there is a flubbing noise from the speakers and there appears to be a clicking sound from the power board.

I' m confused. Is it a cicuit board problem or a safety switch/lamp cover issue. Are we talking about the same set PT-51G50...because I don' t know what lamp cover that you are referring to with one screw. There is a large back cover with multiple screws and a smaller hard board covering the chassis

  • foup Jan 02, 2008

I have searched everywhere for this lamp at the power cord entrance, plus I cannot locate a fan anywhere. Again, are we talking about the same TV? This is not a plasma set.
In any case, if this switch was open, why is there a clicking and "flubbing" sound coming from the set?....Thanks

  • foup Jan 02, 2008

I' m sorry..I went through the instruction manual and the service manual including the 28 pages of the parts list and there is no mention of a fan or lamp. I don' t know if it helps, but the chassis number is AEDP810 and there are 3 CRTs.

  • foup Jan 02, 2008

Do you have more to say...this is the last line I was able to view
"Just check the convergence circuit once..."

Based on your experience, is this a cold solder joint or component short?...Thanks

  • foup Jan 03, 2008

Hi...I already have the whole chassis out and was looking for blown components. The only obvious thing thst I could find was at A19 where there looks like a component is missing on the bottom of the board. There is a silicon imprint...maybe a cap, but I was unable to find any loose parts after I removed the chassis. There is another cap?... also siliconed to the bottom ajacent to it marked "B 121". What is the component that you had in mind for the convergence board?

  • foup Jan 08, 2008

Hello, I did some more checking into this imprint and was unable to find any broken leads to any component in the vincinity.
It may be a mistake at the time of assembly.

Do you have any more details as to a possible component failure or the source of the problem?...Thanks

  • foup Jan 10, 2008

    Hello,
I need a second opinion on my problem. It appears that we have hit a roadblock....Thanks

  • foup Jan 10, 2008

Thanks for the quick response. I checked through the service manual and the instruction manual, but there is no reference to the SSB. Can you be more specific..part number, location

am not sure about my last post. but this post will speak of your problem

The clicking sound is the power ON/OFF relay being pulsed by the
protection circuit. So, the set is going into protection for some
reason. This circuit is monitoring current draw from what might be
shorted circuits somewhere in the set. When detected it shuts the power
    relay OFF.

    That should get you started.

  • dewan nafees ahmed Jan 10, 2008

i already said you not to consider about my previous post.

by recent post tells you what is happening in there.
"The clicking sound is the power ON/OFF relay being pulsed by the
protection circuit. So, the set is going into protection for some
reason. This circuit is monitoring current draw from what might be
shorted circuits somewhere in the set. When detected it shuts the power
    relay OFF.""

so you are seeing the board in front of you. so you can only see the problem. try to locate it yourself. else call some tech who can see it for you and locate that faulty place.

try removing and re-installing the lamp cover on the back.
    may be the lamp cover
is not seated properly causing the safety switch to not engage all the
way, when the lamp cover heats up and expands, it fall away further
from the switch tripping it, shutting the set down.
    when you remove
and re-install the lamp cover, after you take the single screw out,
tilt the cover out and forward from the top about 3/4 of the way out
and then tilt it back into normal position and put the screw back.

Sounds like a power supply problem. I am sure that the pop is the fuse blown. If the fuse is blown, this means that there is a short somewhere. Rear projection TV are like LCD projectors. And all of them use Switch mode power supply. If you are lucky, there is a chance that a protection device (like a varistor) is sorted. This means that removing this, even without replacing will bring your TV to life, however... Most probably the power supply is defective.
