Buzzing noise - loud

I have a dayton utility heater that we had running when we smelt a little burning smell and then all of sudden it started making a loud buzzing noise. I pulled the back off of it and the noise is coming from a electric solenoid on the bottom of the heater a wire comes off of this and goes to the fan. What do I need to look for?

Check for dirt in the air gap that is formed between the electromagnet and the contact form. if there are any shading coils on the magnet check for a broken one.

Why is unit making a buzzing noise that stops only when the interlock switch activates by opening the door?

When the door is open the safety switch turns off power.
1. low voltage transformer may be the culprit. Also a bad fan relay.
very carfully with door off off close safety switch with a insulated probe touch transformer and listen for the buzz.
2. with the transformers it can be a common problem. Check for loose mounting screws.

If the ball was stuck and you sucked water into the motor it could cause it to smell like it's burning if it ruined the motor

Heater and aircon not working, loud rattling noise and smoke from vent, now not power to fan

It appears your fan itself burned out. When a field coil of an electrical fan burns out it usually makes a lot of smoke. The noise could be something that fell in there that stopped the fan from turning freely. I can imagine it heated up under the strain and burned out.

When you restarted it was burnt out so hence no noise and no fan.
The smell of the smoke should also be clue. Electrical field coils burning has an awful soury type of smell.

How to ajust dayton 155000 btu torpedo heater when running smell like kerosen

You say: When running it smells like Kerosene--
That is what you are burning in it, right?

Is it smoking--- like there is a poor combustion mixture?
-- like maybe not enough air pressure?

There is a pressure adjustment for both-- Please check the manual for adjusting the pressures for your particular model.

It is not normal to have a loud buzz associated with the electric heat. Try turning the heat off and running the fan only to see if the buzz continues. The buzz could be coming from any number of sources including an electrical component, the blower wheel, a loose fastener...etc.
The temporary smoke and smell could have been the dust burning off the element if the elements have not been used in a long time. However, if the elements have been running, it could be something got loose in your system and stuck between the blower and the heating elements.....for example, the wiring diagram could have come loose and worked it's way through the wheel. I've also seen owner's manuals left in the air handler that eventually got stuck in the blower. This should be inspected to ensure there is not a fire hazard.

I hope this helps and good luck. :-)

Heater 150,000 just makes a loud hum when plugged in.

Dayton is owened by Desa International so the best bet is to go to the Enerco/ Mr. heater website or call 1-800-251-0001. his is the actual manufacturer so you don't have to pay the mark up of a retail supplier.
