Question about Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) Console
My PSP stopped reading the game disk
You know.. honestly..
i fixed mine..
simply by smacking it and shaking it in a little anger
and all of a sudden it gave in a decided to work and read my UMDs
Now i dont condone violence to such a delicate instrument, but u gotta do what you gotta do.....

Depending on the circumstances, the psp may, and probably, does have UMD drive damage, to the laser, motor etc. I recommend simply:
- replacing umd drive
- contacting a technitian
- sending it back to sony
- wallowing in ignorance

Hi my son just had the same problem. The reason for this is the laser arm that is stucked. If you open the umd case you can see the reader and how it is in the left position. If you dont have to big fingers you can push it to the right. You must pull a litle but be gentle. After that i works again. I have no clue why the laser arm was stucked.

Mine had the same problem--neither of my disks worked. It looked a little dusty inside and a couple blasts of compressed air and it worked fine again.

SOURCE: my psp will not read disks
Put a umd inside wait a sec or two open and check if there is a red light, den the lens is fine its most likely that your cd has been scratched. Try using dev-hook or a custom firmware to read games from memcard

SOURCE: Disk Read error for PS3
call playstation customer service and they will swap it out with a new one. i did one troubleshooting step (restoring default settings). then that didn't work so they set up the exchange. kind of a pain to be without it for a couple of weeks, but better than nothing.

If YOUR WARRANTY IS UP. taking the ps3 apart is easy as long as you have the rght screw drivers. getting the plate off is the hardest part. there is a hex screw under the warranty sticker. after removing the screw, simply slide the plate down and it will pull off. then there are about 8 philips head screws on the casing itself. after removing these screws the top is hinged on the front side of the system... lift the back untin it is at a 90 degree angle and and remove the flat wire that goes to the SDcard slots by lifting the black flapwith your fingernail, then the top is removed. at this point the disk drive is no longe fastened by any screws of clips. pull the plug from the left side toward the front out to diconnect that set of wires. then there is a big flat silver strip connected to the bottom of the drive. once again lift the black flap to release this strip.now you are ready to open the drive itself. there are 2 silver screws on the bottom rear of te drive and 3 black ones at the front. you will need a very small philips head screwdriver for these. then the gray casing will come off. thelense is not exposed yet. there are still 5 or 6 tiny black screws on the top of the drive that will remove the black plastic case THERE ARE 2 TINY WIRES COVERED BY TAPE BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO PULL ON THESE WHEN TAKING THE BLACK COVER OFF
. now the lenseis exposed. simply clean it with rubbing alcohol and q-tips and reassemble the machine. BE SURE NOT TO GET ANY OF THE WIRES PINCHED WHEN SETTING THE DRIVE BACK IN PLACE AND DONT FORGET THE LITTLE METAL GROUND ON THE RIGHT REAR OF THE DISK DRIVE. ANY ?S E-MAIL ME AT email@example.com

sounds like the laser is shot or possibly dirty, either way needs lookin at. so may need new laser. my own personal preference, go custom firmware and do away with using the laser, theres lots info on the web if interested.
