If you turn the vacuum over so you can see the brush roll, there is a brush cover that is held on by (4) screws. Remove those screws and the base plate cover will come off. With the base plate cover off you can access the roller brush an belt. If you need a replacement belt you can get it here:

The vacuum brush does not rotate when on. What should I check?

Check the drive belt that drives the brush from the motor. You should be able to see it underneath the machine.

Brush will not rotate

You probably have a broken brush belt. Unplug the vacuum and turn it upside down. Remove the cover over the brush, sometimes with simple push clips or screws and find the belt. If the belt is there but broken or worn out, take it with you, and the model number of your vacuum to buy a replacement belt. While you have the brush out, clean the ends where it is held in place in the bottom. Many times a lot of dirt and hair gets trapped in there, preventing the brush from spinning.

Brushes stopped rotating

Needs a new drive belt. Find the screws holding the bottom panel onto the floor section of the vac. take out those screws and you should see the motor and the brushes and a broken belt underneath the panel. Check that the brushes spin freely. If not you may have something like hair or string or something jamming the brush. If so cut out the obstruction and then rotate the brushes again and look to see if they rotate evenly, without wobbling because in some vacs if the brushes become jammed and run like that for a while sometimes it wears out the bearings or bushings holding the brush in place and if they are worn you need to replace those as well or when you replace the belt and run the vac it wont take long to break the belt again.

The brush will not rotate. I thought this was a direct drive system.

Note: The brush will not rotate when the machine is locked in the upright position, because an internal micro-switch turns the brush motor off.

- Check the belt through the clear brush cover. If this appears damaged or broken, please take your machine to a local BISSELL Authorized Service Center to have this replaced. If the belt is intact, please continue checking the following:
- Ensure both power switches are turned on when you check for brush rotation.
- Unplug the power cord and remove the handle completely. Slide handle back into the lower section of handle, ensuring the screw is in tight. If the handle is not aligned properly, this will affect the power of the brush motor.
- Look for debris wrapped around the brush (i.e. string, hair, fibers, etc.). When the machine is unplugged, cut away any visible hair, fibers or debris from the brush roller. This brush is NOT removable from the machine.
- If something has become lodged in the foot and the brush shuts off, turn off the vacuum and unplug this from the outlet. You can now remove the obstruction. The brush will automatically reset when the vacuum is plugged in and turned back on.

If you continue to experience difficulty with this, please take your machine to the following Service Center in your area. The warranty on this machine is five years.

How do you change the belt on a bissell 5770

The Bissell 5770/Healthy Home vacuum is actually fairly easy to change the belt on. The main thing you will need is a T20 screwdriver with at least a 4 inch shaft and a Phillips-head screwdriver. Four of the six T20 screws on the bottom plate are easy to locate, the last two are set deeper into the vacuum near the wheels. Once you have taken all six T20 screws out you will have to release the lock preventing the vacuum from tilting back so you can easily remove the top plate and gain access to the brush assembly. With the top plate off you will notice four Phillips-head screws holding a cover plate over the brush, simply remove them and you have full access to the belt.
