Question about GE Monogram ZISS480DRSS Stainless Steel

Mechanical wood pecker in my Monogram Refrigerator?

Precisely every 30 minutes my GE Monogram refrigerator makes a sound like a fast mechanical wood pecker or jack hammer for 1-1/2 seconds, then stops. It seems to be coming from the lower middle section of the unit behind the back wall I cannot make out the source. Everything is working properly so I cannot figure it out. It is loud enough to wake us up at night. This just started today. Unit is just over 2-1/2 years old.

Any help would be great!

    Thanks for your quick reply...

Never had any other trouble with it. Makes ice like a champ and as far as I can tell the temp never fluctuates more than 1 or 2 degrees.

By "tray" I am not sure what you mean. If you are talking about the thing at the bottom of most refrigerators that slides out this model does not have one. It is a built in side by side with the evaporator at the top.

Will try turning it off for a while. Have another fridge we can transfer stuff into.

OK.. New info! There is a little door between the freezer and the fridge inside that opens or closes to better control the temp and air flow (I guess that is what it is for). At any rate that is our problem. I can reproduce the problem exactly when I plug the unit in and watch this door. It closes, then opens and when it reaches the max open position it ratchets, creating our noise (much like when you turn a gas cap too far). I am now thinking it is a switch that tells the motor to stop turning that must be stuck open or is bad. I really do not want to tear this thing apart but paying a gazillion for GE service guy to come out and do it will only infuriate me more. I just surprises me that you pay $6000 for a fridge and it is not much better than a $600 model.

Any suggestions here or is this beyond your scope of knowledge?

Either way, thanks for your help and have a happy new year.
