Question about CyberLink SW- DVD Software Power DVD (SWPOWERDVD) DVD Drive

2 Answers

Audio When I play any dvd in my Power DVD player on my computer, I can hear all the audio in the movie except the character dialogue. The audio in all the other parts of the dvds are fine, including previews. I have tried the karaoke button and changing audio streams. All of them work except the English. Can you help me?

"Power DVD Player" is free software that should not be confused with "PowerDVD", which is commercial software from CyberLink. Which is it that you are using?

I believe that "Power DVD Player" has some problems with decoding audio. I am not 100% sure of that, can anyone confirm or deny? I know I have heard very soft audio with it. It is hard to see how it would distinguish between characters' voices and other sounds on the movie soundtrack. Perhaps it has to do with what channel the sounds are on in the Dolby 5.1 audio encoding?

Uninstall the audio driver and then restart the PC and reinstall it if the problem presists then search the update driver and install it.

Check your center channel. Most dialogue is routed to the center channel in surround.

Hello there,

It sounds like everything is working correctly to me. Voices / spoken dialogue should mostly be from the front speakers and surround audio (music, effects, etc) from all speakers.

The TV screen is in front of you so the people on the TV screen are also (technically) in front of you. Naturally, I would expect the spoken dialogue to come from the front speakers only - except in some instances, where dialogue in the movie is from a character not currently on screen. If you had voices from both in front of and behind you when the characters are only in front of you, it would be totally disorientating.

If you have audio from all five speakers during a movie then all of your connections and settings are correct. The problem you are describing is really just a description of how surround sound works.

I hope this helps. If I misunderstood the question or the problem, please let me know.

Regards,
BElectric.

Hi edwardm1,

If you are only hearing part of the audio from your DVD player, I would suggest you check your audio settings before seeking repairs.

Audio can be encoded to a DVD in several ways. If the audio on the disc is different than the settings on your DVD player, you may not hear all of the audio layers. For example, if your DVD is encoded in 5.1 Surround Sound, but your DVD player is set only to play basic Stereo, you may only hear portions of the audio.

Try accessing the menu on your DVD player, and look for the audio settings. If there is a higher setting available than is currently selected, try a higher audio setting. A higher setting should also be compatible with lower types of audio encoding.

If this does not improve your audio, or if you need help navigating your product menus, I would recommend giving Pioneer's toll-free support line a call at (800) 421-1404.

Thank you,

Emerson dvd player - background sound lauder than dialogue

Greetings surfjax,

If you will allow me to make an assumption, you do not have a 5.1 surround system connected to your DVD player. This is a common experience with users of a standard TV or stereo receiver if a movie is being presented in 5.1.

In a surround sound system the center channel speaker provides almost all the vocal tracks while the side channels will provide music and some background noises. You'll still be able to hear the voices in your side speakers, but it will be muted and over powered by music or sound effects.

Some DVD players allow you to "Downmix" the surround signal to stereo. You might want to look around your sound setup on the DVD player or check your owners manual.

Hope this helps.

Can I turn off the soundtrack?

i don't think thats possible. what you are hearing is the 'mixed' track.
to hear the unmixed tracks (there may be 2 or 3 in all) you wld have to play the dvd using an editing software on a computer where all the audio tracks can be seen separately and one or some or all can be turned off / turned down, etc.
