Re: atlas frost refrigerator

Push in the red "Defrost Button" located in the center of the temperature control dial. Defrost cycle will start immediately. NOTE: Turning the temperature control dial to the OFF position is not required. Defrosting usually takes a few hours. When defrosting is complete, the red "Defrost Button" will release automatically. Then the refrigerator will resume normal operation while moving towards the set temperature. NOTE: After defrosting, allow a few hours to reach the set temperature before making any further adjustments.

SOURCE: ice in the bottom of frigidaire side by side frost proof freezer

take all the bottom shelves and baskets out of the freezer. look at the back wall of the freezer. youll see a block of ice in a metal pan looking part at the bottom of the rear panel. there is a hole in the bottom of that pan. thats the defrost drain. its clogged. use a hair dryer to get all the ice out then use hot water to flush out the drain hole.

SOURCE: REd light is flashing over

Hi!!Check temp. settings, If temp is too warm the fridge starts beeping and flashing the lights. the most common problems are:

  • Ice build up on freezer back wall or evaporator, take a look behind the drawers, it should not have any ice build up.
  • Bad Evaporator Fan Motor or dirty Evaporator Coils,
  • Defective Door Seal/Gasket
  • Bad Defrost Heater
  • Defective Thermostat
  • Bad Compressor or Freon Gas low
Unplug power cord from wall outlet for 5 min., plug it back up and check that the compressor and condenser fan on the back are working, open the freezer and check that the evaporator fan is working. Good Luck! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

Freezer is OK. Refrigerator is 45 degrees

Why did the power fail? I had a refrigerator blow both its computer boards by a power failure.

However, there is a procedure for fixing a frig. Most likely the defrost heater is not working. (Your situation sounds like it might be something else.)

On the back wall of the freezer are the cooling tubes. These must get very cold and frost up with time. There is no such thing as a "frost free" refrigerator. All coils frost up. What actually happens in a "frost free" refrigerator is that every so often the refrigerator part shuts off for a while and a heater turns on to heat the coils to remove the frost. This frost turns to water and drains out the back to a sump outside the refrigerator. What usually happens is the heater burns out. Sometimes the timer stops if it is a motor driven timer and sometimes the computer fails if it is computer driven.

If the coils freeze solid with ice the air cannot circulate through the back tubes and into the refrigerator section so will give you exactly your problem.

The easiest way to do this is to take all of the food out of both parts of the refrigerator. You need about two days to fix this. Unplug the frig. Pull it forward. Look at how much water is in the pan under the refrigerator. Leave both doors open for two days. Then look at how much water is in the pan. It should be FULL or Overflowing. This means that the coils were frosted up. If it is empty then this means that the tube to the pan is plugged. If it is only half full then this means everything is good and it most likely the circulatory fan which is in the refrigerator portion.

If the tube is clogged the easiest way to clear it is to hook a wet vac up to it and suck it clear. You can push a plastic line up through the tube but this may bend the fins or break the heater that are located in the freezer. I use a weed eater line for this.

Most likely it is the heater element that is out. These are standard replacement items and most appliance repair shops have them. You cannot change these until the ice is all melted and using a hair dryer takes a long time. It is easier to just wait the two days.

If you have an automatic ice machine in the freezer this must be removed before the back panel can be removed.

Good luck.

Freezer builds up with frost about every 60-75 days. have to empty the freezer and allow to thaw for a few hours

I think I can assume the freezer isn't a "frost-free".
A short physics lesson; hot air holds more moisture than cold air; hot air will flow from a warm area to a colder area, and the colder area will cause the moisture to condensate and freeze(if colder area below freezing, as a freezer should be), causing frost build up.The more often the freezer is opened, the more frost will build up.
Now for 3 possibilities:1) If it is a self-defrosting type, check your defrost timer control...not working, or not working often enough.2) Door seals damaged and need replacement.3)Make the kids stay out of freezer.

Water leaks from below the fridge a couple times a day?

There are several sources of water from within your refrigerator. The most likely source for the frequency you are experiencing, "couple of times a day", is the defrost system.

When your refrigerator defrosts, a heater that surrounds the evaporator piping behind the freezer back wall comes on which melts the frost on the coils causing the water to run into a drain below the evaporator. This drain can clog up with foreign particles accumulating in the drain. The clogging can cause the drain to spill over into the floor of the freezer and run out the door along the bottom of the freezer door through the door seal. This will usually leave an ice sheet on the floor of the freezer. If you do not have an ice sheet...the drain is not clogged.

The second method by which water ends up on the floor is a broken pan beneath the refrigerator intended to catch the water as it leaves the drain in the freezer. To test this, use a turkey baster and pump water into the freezer drain at the rear bottom of the freezer behind the wall using the holes in the wall. Watch under the refrigerator to see where the water ends up.

Performing these actions will lead you to the solution.

Freezer items have frost on them. Refrigerator

Possibly bad door seals. Take a dollar bill, around the perimeter of the door seals, shut the bill in the door in various different places and see if it pulls out loosely at any point. If so, you have a bad seal. Frost in the freezer means that there is too much humidity in the freezer.

Water leaking from freezer

During the defrost cycle heaters inside the walls of the freezer turn on to melt the frost. The melted frost "water" is supposed to drain into a pan under the fridge where it will evaporate. I think the drain line from the freezer to this pan may be blocked. I'd also check the seal on the freezer door. If it's not sealing well it lets a lot of moisture into the freezer which means more water during the defrost cycle.

Generally speaking if the refrigerator does not cool and you have frost on the back wall of the freezer it suggests a defrost problem.
However since the refrigerator started working by itself it would point to an air circulation problem from the fan in the freezer compartment failing to operate. The frost on the back wall without the fan operating would cause frost buildup because the heat is still trying to get to the coil through the back wall. If your refrigerator freezer has a door fan light switch something holding the door partly open would cause the fan not to operate. Look for a button or toggle and manually push it in. You should hear the fan turn on and the light will go off.

Hotpoint Ice diamond fridge freezer both green & red lights on.? takes about two days to fully defrost these units unless you take the freezer section cover off and use a heat source. If you sure to protect yourself against water and electricity mixing....not healthy. See below for another note.

clean the condenser coils below the unit.

check for the amount of gas in the unit. It must be off for half an hour. Remove the back fiber panel. The big thing is the compressor. Clean off the largest pipe coming out of it. Plug the unit out for the fan! The pipe should frost up and then clear off or stay wet after about 5 minutes. It should not be frosty. If it is, you need refrigerant.

Note: If you do remove the inside freezer panel and defrost, you can see how much refrigerant you have in your unit. Start the unit. Wait 5 minutes and observe the coils. They should be evenly frosted end to end. If approximately so, you're good. If not, you're low on gas.
