Problem for Texas Instruments TI-89 Calculator

Argument error whenever I type equations with variables.

By jessica1165 on Oct 22, 2009

Whenever I type anything in with a variable "x" it comes up as an "argument error" and won't simplify, factor, or solve any equations. Typing the int(x,x) doesn't work, for example, and neither does 8x^2/(5x) to simplify.

Perhaps you have some data stored in the x variable.

With the calculator on, press [2nd] then the minus button. This brings up a list of all the saved data in the calculator. Look through the far left column of the list for x.

If you find x in the list, highlight x, then press F1, and then select delete.

Now it should work like normal.

Hello,
Clear the variable x of it old content. In Home folder on command line press x [ENTER] and see what x contains. It should return x. To clear all one-letter variables [2nd][F6:CleanUp][1;Clear a-z][ENTER] If you want to operate on x times sin(x) you should explicitely use the * sign otherwise xsin(x) is interpreted as some unkown entity. Here is a screen capture to illustrate the case.

Hope it helps.
