anti virus was expired and just downloaded avg but not working properly when i scanned my laptop. had a couple of viruses and my system slows down

ok, press f8 on startup and you should have a menu appear , select safe mode,

Now once booted select AVG scan, a command window will open and a scan will take place,

This should solve your problem,
