Have lost original disc which came with the Sony PCG-C1XD notebook computer. I want to use it again but inadvertent keystrokes have corrupted the current Win98 installation. Also this prevents the external PCMCIA-connected disk drive from being recognized. Thanks for your time.

- I should really have explained that the accidental keystrokes prevents booting to complete. A message saying "Windows protection. You will need to restart your computer" Restarting merely brings this message up every time, and the only way I can boot is in the SAFE mode, but this does not help because I don't know what those bad keystrokes were so that I can try to correct them perhaps. The SAFE mode also prevents the disc drive from being recognized. So it's all a vicious circle. Anyway, many thanks for the interest you have shown in my predicament.Best Solution

If you've lost the original disk, I would contact Sony, but since the OS is so old, you may want to speak with a professional to see if they have the disks you require (they should).
As for the disk drive, a USB disk drive may work, but it really depends on the hardware. Given the age, I doubt it will, unfortunately.
Best bet is to contact a professional.

So Sorry! All registered and licensed softwares especially microsoft windows, are tied to every single machine when you purchased it and that every machine has it's own license key, your have one too. Since Windows 98 is not supported anymore, it will be difficult to find one. You will have 2 options:
- contact the manufacturer of your system and request for a copy or
- purchase one, if you can find a retail store a sells old Softwares
