Problem with picture freezing on dvd player

Hi Guys,

I seem to be having a problem with my LG dvd player I bought about a year ago. It seems that some of the dvd's I hire from Blockbusters Video store tend to freeze about halfway through the movie.

It starts off with a glitch in the picure, it then progresses to about a second long freeze, which gets more frequent and finally it freezes then unfreezes then freezes and unfeezes again about every second or two for the remainder of the movie.

Once the movie has finished, it has absolutely no trouble getting through the credits.

Blockbusters blames my dvd player, but I think it may have something to do with the copying of the dvd's perhaps, because I treied two different copies of a particular movie and they both started freezing at the same movie scene.

Can you guys shed some light onto this, do you know what is happening and why?

Any help would be appreciated, and you can contact me on stormxtc@hotmail.com

Steve.

After playing for awhile, many DVD's freeze then unfreeze repeatedly with the end often being a permanent freeze up or frustration ending the show. This has happened with many DVD's that had run well previously on the machine.

    Cleaning the DVD doesn't work.

Question now is whether to try to have it fixed or "recycle" it and get a new one.

Movies freeze, get choppy and sometimes get completely locked up. Extremely frustrating, playing with skip, FF, RW or play buttons does not solve the problem but sometimes gets the machine to respond, if atleast momentarily. Usually we just tell the kids that the machine is "tired" and that it is time to play or do something else. Please Help!

I have a problem consistantly with movies I rent from Blockbuster. They freeze up constantly. The other night I was ready to toss the player because everytime I rent a movie it happens. Just out of curiousity, I put one of my own DVDs in and it ran perfectly! Something's up with Blockbusters stock, whether it cheaply made or some scanning process they're using is screwing them up digitally.

SOURCE: "freezes" halfway through dvd

sounds like theres an obstuction with the slider rail. This is the small metal bar that the laser assy rides on. Also check the drive system. It could be a gear to gear system or a belt to gear system. There could be also a cable blocking the laser from tracking. This is a hard call without seeing the unit But you have to remeber to unplug the unit before taking odff the top. Good Luck

SOURCE: dvd player frequently pauses or freezes while trying to play audio cd's

You tried cleaning the lens right?  That's the first thing I would do. You may have to actually open up the unit and use some windex on a cotton swap to clean the lens. Be very careful not to overwet the cotton swab. Use the other end of the swab to dry the lens.

The red wavelength of light from the laser might not be getting through the lens properly, which is used for the Audio CDs, where the higher frequency laser is used for the DVD material.

SOURCE: DVD Freezing / skipping

It almost has to be the discs. Try them in a friends unit.

I had a similar problem with DVD's I burned and had printed labels and put the label on the discs. It caused the disc to be out of balance. I peeled them all off (what a job) and the discs play fine now. I'm now a "magic marker" person... :)

SOURCE: DVD Freezes during playback

it might be that you are playing a dual layer dvd in the player. The player needs to focus on the second layer of the movie, and that might be why the dvd freezes. Leave it there for a while and the dvd should continue if it is this situation.

SOURCE: Will not initalise DVD +RW

the spindle may need cleaning. if the spindle is dirty the disc will slip causing errors when burning discs.

to do this you will have to open the unit up and remove the drive from the machine.

undo the screws holding the casing together (7 In total) and remove the top of the unit

the drive is similar to a normal pc dvd drive and is held in a clamp

next undo the four screws holding the circuit board to the right of the drive and carefully move it to expose two of the four screws holding the clamp in place, the other two screws are already visible on the left hand side of the drive

now carefuly remove the two cables from the back of the drive and undo the four screws holding the clamp in place. you should now be able to lift the drive, still in its clamp, from the unit.

undo the four screws holding the drive in the clamp and slide the drive out

on the bottom of the drive there are four screws holding the casing together, remove these, and carefuly coax and tease the casing apart. dont use force, be gentle.

using a cotton bud and alcohol, carefuly clean the spindle, removing all dust and dirt. you may as well clean the lens and any other dirt from the unit whilst you have it open

put the machine back together by reversing these instructions

Hello Mark. Most likely your player is regionalized and not compatable ith those DVD's that won't play. To eliminate the regional setting on your player go to this link http://www.wisebread.com/make-your-dvd-player-region-free-in-seconds

It contains the step by step instructions on how to make your player region free. It also has an how to video and a full explanation of why the regionalization was installed in the first place. Joe

Stops Playing: screen freezes

My friend suggested I clean the dvd optical reader lens inside the player with a fine brush (like a camera brush with a blower bulb). This seemed to help immensely. I'm not certain if this is just a temporary fix, but it seems to be ok so far.
