Re: Heating element

It depends on what kind of heating element you are referring to. If you have a test meter it is very easy. With the meter set to resistance put a test probe at each end of the element. The reading should be very low, almost short-circuit. If you're not technically minded, your probably completely lost by now...sorry.

The only other thing you can do is take a close look at it. If it is badly discoloured or has blackened, it has probably had it.

Without knowing more about the appliance and a few more details it is difficult to give any further advice.

My rannai propane heater makes a whistling sound.

Check the fan. Unplug the unit and remove the panel that houses the fan unit. Electrical cleaner can be sprayed onto the connection points of the nicad heater elements as well as the fan motor. It may be that one of the heating coils has a bad connection. Take apart and reassemble heating elements and connection points.

My heater is not working at all only my power supply light is on

unplug the heater. remove the screws holding the control panel, pull the control out from the body of the heater enough to get the probes of an ohmmeter onto the connections that lead to the heating element. the ohmmeter should read less than 100 ohms. if the ohmmeter reads infinite ohms (open circuit), the heating element or the connections to it ate bad. if the heating element is bad, cheaper to buy a new heater. if the heating element is okay, repair connections or control.

How do I check my hot water element?

1)Locate the upper heating element in the top access. The heating element is above the thermostat, and all you will see is a round disc with two wires attaching to the disk.
  • 2)Set your ohm meter to the X1 or RX 1 scale to measure the continuity of the heating element. Touch each of the ohm meter probes to each of the terminal screws on the heating element. A positive reading indicates a good element. If there is no reading, the element is faulty.
  • 3)Test for a possible short in the heating element with the ohm meter. Touch one ohm meter probe to one of the heating element terminals. Touch the other ohm meter probe to the bracket that secures the heating element. If you get a reading of zero, the element is good. If there is any positive reading on the scale, the element is grounding itself and will require replacement.
  • 4)Test the lower heating element exactly as the upper heating element.
  • 5)Place the access doors back on the water heater tank, and secure them with the screws.

  • Good luck

It heats for a minute or two and then stops heating.

The heater overload switch is sensing an over heating problem and is turning the unit OFF. It may be as simple as a clogged heating element. Over time they do become clogged with dust, lint, pet hair, etc. This is because the air intake for the heating element is a floor level. So, whatever is floating in the household air gets sucked into the heating element when the fan is ON. Using a vacuum with a hose and brush attachment works well in cleaning the heater element. Be sure the unit is OFF & unplugged, before attempting this. You may be able to access the heating element thru the lower louvered door. Or consult your Owner's Manual regarding the cleaning of the unit.

I hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

My cadet c202 heater is running the fan is blowing cold air but no heat, is it the thermostat or heating elements or both???or ?????

I work in a motel and replace these heaters quite often, Cadet C202, a 240v 2000 watt wall heater. Most of the time when they blow cold air it's because the heating element is broken. First turn off the circuit breaker, then remove the heater from the wall. If you take out three screws, slide the top cover off, bend the two little tabs and take out the heating element, you can examine it and usually you will find a place where it is broken, it's like a big spring. Replacement elements can be ordered from online stores such as Be very careful, 240 VAC is very dangerous! <!-- from fixya rte -->
