My HP photosmart c4385 displays an "E"

Try to take out cartridges and check the chip. Maybe it is grimy. Clear it with cotton buds soaked with ethyl alcohol or vodka or some strong alcohol. Clear also the connectors in the printer.
Put the cartridges back.

there are 4 screws on the sides remove these and the rest are clips

With the printer on, pull down the cartridge door (the front section above the paper tray). This puts the carriage on the right hand side. Remove the tape from the new cartridge without touching the copper area. With the HP logo up, push the cartridge slightly down and forward until it snaps in. The color cartridge goes in the left slot and the black goes on the right. Push firmly to ensure the cartridge is fully in place. Close the cover and press OK in response to the onscreen prompts. (Confirm installation and then align the cartridge.) If the test page come out correctly press OK at the status page (in the LCD menus).

DO YOU HAVE THE INSTALL DISK?if you do insert allow it to come up and follow the instructions do not plug the printer in until you are prompted to do so.

Go to www.hp.com and let the website auto-detect your printer.

Don't try to scan from the printer control panel.  You need to launch the "HP Photo and Imaging Director" from your computer.  I have HP Photo & Imaging SoftwareVersion 2.0 installed which I believe was obtained from the HP site for the C4385.

The scan function works fine if you use this software.
