Sony Hi8 Problem

By paulrmc - usenet poster

My Sony camcorder has started to show what I can only describe as
"stars" on tapes that I record.
They are intermittent dots of light that seem to appear randomly on
playback.  I reviewed some tapes from about 6 months ago & no
problem...just occurs on recently recorded tapes.  Suggestions?

I recently had noise show up on new recordings (OK on playback of old
tapes).   Took it to the Sony Service Center here in Denver.  They
replaced a drum, and it works fine now.  By the way, Sony Service
Centers have a fixed rate to repair stuff.  For camcorders it's $189,
whether all they have to do is clean the heads, or replace them.  It
never happened to me, but I know two different people whose cameras Sony
couldn't fix, so they got new cameras out of the deals.

Did you change the brand or type of tape you are using?  I had a similar
problem.  I would get black streaks when I was filming something with a
bright background.  I was using the Sony and Fuji Pro tapes.  I tried using
the Sony ME tapes and got the same thing so I tried the Sony MP tapes and
no problem so far.  I now pay about $7 for my tapes as opposed to $15.  I
guess using the "Best" isn't always the best thing to do.
