Once the manufacturers message is deleted it is not available unless it was stored elsewhere. It will be best to check with your dealer to confirm on this or you can always get someone to mime the same tone voice.
Dial your telephone number from any touch tone telephone. When the system answers and announces the greeting, enter the two-digit security code (19 if you haven't changed it). If you have new messages, the system will play them (new messages first) automatically. There are additional options. Full details are in the "Remote Access" section beginning on page 42 of the manual at http://vt.vtp-media.com/ecp/documents/product_Product/55/UserManual/106/CS5121_Manual.pdf

Call your phone number. After the greeting is finished and you hear the beep to leave a message push 123 on a touch tone phone and you will be given a list of things you can choose to do including listening to messages. 123 is the default security code unless the security code has been changed. Since you dont know how to retrieve messages Im assuming the default security code has never been changed.
If 123 is not the default security code and you dont know what the code is, you can change your code in the setup menu. You get to this by pushing the stop/set button on the answering machine and holding it for a couple of seconds. Since GE doesnt offer a downloadable manual for the 29878GE1 you should probably take a look at the manual for the 29875GE1 which is basically the same model with the addition of a digital message counter. Hope this helps.
Well, your machine might be broken, or you haven't set the little switch on the unit to ANS.The switch is on the side of the machine where the cables come out.But here are the instructions from the manual:
Recording Outgoing Messages:
Your answering machine has a built-in outgoing message, "Hello, please leave a message after the tone."You can use this message or record your own.
1. Hold the ANNC/DAY/<<, and speak clearly into the microphone, no more than 10 inches away.
2. Release the ANNC/DAY/<< when you finish.Your answering machine beeps and automatically plays back your recorded message.
*Your outgoing message must be between one and 60 seconds.
*If you record your won message but wish to revert to the pre-recorded message, press DELETE during playback of your outgoing message.
I phoned in from another phone and retrieved my messages. The problem was not with the answering machine but with the phone and calling card I had been using. Don't use a hotel switch board nor calling card, too many intermediate parties for the 2 digit code to work with.
Found my manual! To set the time, press and hold the time/code button for 2 seconds. You will hear "TO SET CODE PRESS TIME AND CODE BUTTON." Release the time/code button. Press the 2 way/m button once. You will hear "SET DAY AND TIME, SUNDAY" Press the << or >> button until you hear the correct day. Press the time/code button once. You will hear "TWELVE" Press the << or >> button until you hear the correct hour. Press the time/code button once. You will hear "OH". Press the << or >> button until you hear the correct minutes. Press the time/code button once. You will hear "PM". Press the << or >> button if you need to change to AM. Press the time/code button once and you will hear the complete time and day setting.
To record an outgoing message, press and hold the ogm button. Release the ogm button and start to record after you hear "PLEASE RECORD AFTER THE TONE" followed by a beep tone. When finished, press the ogm button.
Make sure you put a battery in the answering machine so you don't lose these settings if the power goes out!
