There's a certain combination of keys you must press to restore your monitor to its factory settings (the original settings of the monitor ). The most common way is to press the up and down button together (normally beside the function/ menu button). Another way to lighten/brighten up the display is to raise the brightness settings of the monitor or by changing the contrast settings. This method enables you to customize the display of the monitor to suit your needs. If you still have the manual of the monitor, you can find instructions on how to change the settings of your monitor.

You never should use the picture you see on the monitor of the camera. Not one camera has a calibrated screen. And the brightness is changed very easy in the setup menu.
To test if your camera shoots good pictures, select AUTO on the mode dial. Shoot some pictures and look on the PC or just print them.
Your camera has so many settings, that over rule the brightness when you switch to it, like + and - 2 EV setting. But when you chose for A, P, S, or M, the pictures can be to dark or to bright, if you dial in the wrong settings. So don't evaluate the pictures on the monitor. Only use the histogram on your camera to see if you have a correct, to dark or to light picture.

Put a light up to the screen to see if its just the light. If you can see your background its the light or a light setting, otherwise it will need to be repaired.

Dark

It could be a few things, it may be the monitor itself, which naturally has dark picture.
Or by factory default the monitor has low brightness.
Try going into the menu and putting the brightess up.
Most monitors have low brightness by default.
have a happy new year.

There are usually controls, button or knobs, to "Stretch" "Move" "Pincusion" and others... have you tried this, as this is what it "Sounds" like to me from ya description? If there are NO controls on the front to accomplish this task, at the REAR of the unit there should be controls marked to show the function. Below is a link where ya will find a Manual that may help ya. http://www.retrevo.com/s/HP-7600-Monitors-review-manual/id/281ci552/t/1-2/
