Question about Hitachi 60SX12B/13K 60" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

TV will not turn on. Shuts down by itself.

The problem originally was it would shut down at anytime while operating by itself. No problem, just turn the tv power back on. It progressively got worse where it may do this 2 or 3,4 times a day. Now the set will not go back on at all ,or if your lucky enough where power stays on it eventually looses power and shuts down. After taking a look in back of set with cover off, I do have a red light on which tells me that there is no problem with the power to the set, but nothing else. I really like this tv and works great otherwise, but do not want to spend a great deal of money if it is not worth it! Please help me and give your advice on what could be wrong with the set.

I have a Hitachi 60SX12B rear projection TV. The TV turns off while in normal operation. The problem has been getting progressively worse. At first it would shut it’s self off on rare occasions and would work fine once it was turned back on. As time went on it became daily until now it will turn it’s self off and not come back on unless I wait a few minutes then it will shut down after a minute or two. I called Hitachi service center and was told to unplug the TV for 1 minute and try again. When that didn’t work she said to try another outlet. I said your just reading a “cook book” and aren’t really a technicians aren’t you. She answered, “Not really.” I thanked her and hung up.

I have a similar problem with the same TV. Although it has never shut itself off, it will not turn on. I can hear a relay click when I try to turn it on and off either with the remote or at the TV, so the TV does have power. Does this require the same fix or is this a different animal? This is the first trouble I've had with the TV since I bought it in 1996. Although it's huge, it has always worked well and I'd like to save it if it makes sense.

I turn the tv on, about 10 minutes later it shuts off. I turn it back on and it shuts down again. I opened up the back and figured out that the protection on the circuts was shutting it down. So, I pushed the reset button that is located next to the magic focus button at the front end of the tv and it still shuts down.

These Hitachi models are a bear but this may be the fix: Regulator STRM 6511 and C915. A good tv repairman should know this. This should be changed first before determining that the high voltage transformer is bad which is likely to be the worse case senario and may not be available anymore.

Hi again, c915 is located on the power supply board that has the strm 6511 regulator ic and it is a capacitor with a value of 3300 micro farads at 50 volts. The number c915 is a location number printed on the board itself. If you replace it yourself you must realize that is has a positive and negative poles. You can see the negative sign on the side of the capacitor. The new one must go back the same way. I would urge you to let someone you know that has experience with soldering and desoldering electronic circuits do the job. I am going by memory on the value of the capacitor but you could check it by looking in your tv. I may have the voltage rating wrong too. It may be lower. like 35 or 25 volts. This is the best I can offer you at this time . If you have anymore questions please do not hesitate to ask.

My Magnavox digital converter box shuts itself off every 5 minute

Check that you have not got an auto power off setting on. Check that the aerial connections are good. That the signal is strong from the stations it is picking up. Weak signals can cause the box to shut down.
It the box is very hot when it shuts down, you might have a fault on it.

Tv shuts itself down

This is due to bad caps read here what a cap is see you tv is getting hot as normal but the caps cannot stand it any more thus shutting the tv down. The bad caps would be more or less in the power supply unit of this TV. So you can buy a new psu or get it repaired by a expert.

Tv shuts itself off

The power supply may be going on to protection mode. This is usualy because one of the scan amplifiers may have failed, or something is taking too much current and forcing the power supply to shut down.

Unplug the three red-blue-green plugs nest to the convergence amps. If the unit powers up and stays on the picture will look bad but will confirm that the convergence amps have failed...
Replacing the amps and one or more resistors in the yoke return will restore the set to normal operation..
Use only Sanyo original Ics..
