Want to put a toggle switch for my wipers in my '89 chevy 1 ton van i broke the lever for it

ask the supervisor of the car dealer's service department, he should know or give you another reference. Doesn't seem like it would work though.

Wiper motor may be shorting out and burning up.

Your best bet here is to go to the dealer or a reputable tune up shop and see if they will provide you with wiring diagrams for both years. If you explain your predicament, they will most likely give them to you.They don't like to tackle these kinds of jobs. Then you will have to go through them to see what is different.That is the only way to solve this problem.
Every year there are changes in the details with wiring harness and it's probable that you may have to change the position of some wires going into or out of the computer. Trace out the circuit on both diagrams and reconfigure the 89 harness to match the contact points and routing obf the 90 and you should be able to get your wipers working properly and your gauges to stop flashing. to whom it may concern, you cant used the harness of 1989 model to 1990 model chevy truck, even the sockets are the same a,b,c,d, thers a big different on wire distribution from the ecu. it better that you find harness on the same model, or if you still not yet finish that problem i will gave you the 1990 ecu diagram on live chat or contact me @ my ym

Sounds like a loose connection, Clean the fuse contacts. Sometimes lubricant and dirt gets on the contacts within the switch itself and this will interfere with power supply. Have you checked the wiper relay corrosion and wear on the relay contacts impair electrical connection. Brighten up contacts with fine sand paper and if the relay contacts are suspect, remove the cover and draw folded sand paper between the contacts until clean.

If it's a multi-function switch or a single function arm, you will need to remove the steering wheel to access the attachment points. If you never have done this, get a basic manual such as haynes or chilton. Both have decent instructions to guide you and after, they have lots of good info to help with other problems as well. Since it's an 89, it's doubtful if it has an airbag...that makes things a lot less complicated.

Hello, This is usually one of two problems.

1. The wiper motor has gotten weak or a dead spot in the motor windings. this would cause it to not start depending on where the motor stopped last. The motor is usually a easy change.

2. The other things it could be is you wiper switch has a bad connection or just in need of replacement. This could be a harder job depending on how much of the column you need to take apart to get the lever switch out.

if you put in a toggle switch,run directly from the battey and use a nob that way you can cotrol the speed just by turning it

my 2002 express van did the same. replaced the fan, it now has no troubles.
