Yesterday I powered on my Compaq Evo N610c and it went to the compaq logo screen where I went into bios by pressing f10. When I was in bios it locked up so I hard booted the system by pressing and holding the power button. When I tried to restart the system nothing showed up on the screen (it was completely black) but the lights on the front showed that there was hard drive activity. After several reboots and retries (about 15 minutes of them) the light for the hard drive stopped showing any activity now (it just lights up for a second then shuts off). The one thing I noticed and it seems strange is if the DVD-rom drive is out but the hard drive is in the light wont flash. It only flashes if the DVD-rom drive is in. I've tried booting it up with both the battery only and the A/C and it both has the same results. I'm at my wits end and hoping that someone here can help me figure out what is wrong. Thanks in advance.
I am having the same problem with my hp compaq nx9030 I cant figure it out. I press the power button and the cpu fan starts for a couple seconds, and the hard drive light comes on on, power light is on, but everything is completely inactive. And I have had problems getting it to boot in the past. Sometimes having to turn the computer on and off 10+ times to get it to boot.
Turn on your computer and do nothing,, when it seems the computer stop running key in fn+f4.

I tried hitting fn+f4 but it doesnt seem like it did anything. What would I have been looking for? If the motherboard was how could I tell?
I had the same problem, but it is NOT hardware, but software related. Insert XP disk, and do a REPAIR. Some of the start up files are not reading correctly. This will cause the N610c to exhibit a non-functioning state. After the repair from the XP disk completes, remove the disk and power down. Reboot, then do WINDOWS UPDATE. This solved my problem. Originally thought my HDD was toast. Hope this helps solve your problem.
