We had a "battery low" message during start up and then before we could do anything about it the computer froze and we couldnt turn it off, other than by switching off the power. We replaced the lithium battery but now the computer only starts to boot, gets to the first Windows XP screen at the beginning of the startup sequence and then all we get is the white cursor arrow in the middle of a black / blank screen.
We cant get into anything to do a system restore and Dell are sending us the operating system disk as it didnt come with the desktop when we bought it, we are hoping we can do a repair rather than reinstall as we have lots of data that we dont want to lose.
Any suggestions on the problem, and if using the Op System disk is the right thing to do? Very grateful for any help / advice, thanks.
you could try booting into safe mode, then you could try a system restore look for the F8 option at the bottom after the first boot window,
youll know youve got it when you get the option to boot into safe mode, if this works you should get to your desktop, if you get the admin login its normally admin as user and leave the password blank.
if you cant get into safe mode, wait till you gt the recovery disks and try a system recovery before reinstalling

- just something you could try, just in case you have to format
take your harddrive out and plug it into another pc (another of yours/friends maybe) set it to slave and that way you when it boots you can take a copy of files etc thats on the harddrive before you format it.
