Sounds like the cartridge is stripped where it goes into the handle. If it is not coming on at all from either the hot or the cold....I would say there is a blockage inside the valve body.

You need to install a new moen cartridge its a single handle posi-temp cartridge you should be able to get 1 for free if you are the original owner by calling 1-800-buy-moen more than likely when soldering in the new valve a little bit of solder broke free into the cartridge or hard water. When the water gets turned off and then turned back on it can break free alot of particles that can get jammed up in these cartridges or any fixture for that matter you will need a cartridge puller to perform this job with ease.

If you pull the silver knob on the tub spout up, the diverter located located inside will redirect water up to the shower head and when lowered it will return the water to the tub spout. It sounds as thought the diverter is not working properly. Hope this helps..

My shower will have been turned off for hours all of a sudden it gives one large gush [drip] then will not drip for a while but will do so intermittantly. ps. this is a shower not a bath tub / shower

This is not necessarily an issue, air enters slowly and eventually lets some water escape. This may happen until the water is lower than the highest point of the shower discharge circuit.

Constant drip

there may be some debris caught in the cartridge's,got push'ed in when water was turned back on.take apart and look in the brass valve body to see if any thing is in there.flush it out before you re-assemble it.take a good look at the cartridge, make sure there is no scuff mark's or any deformities.

I installed a Moen Adler faucet. It will not shut

You may just have a piece of sediment lodged in the cartridge from when the water was shut off during installation. Carefully remove the cartridge and turn the water on to flush out any obstructions. re install the cartridge and test.
