After booting my system to windows my pc turns itself off after or about 5mins. of running. what are the possible causes? And what steps should I take to resolve this problem?
If the PC doesnt show the shutting down dialogue, then hardware proble if it does then its a software problem. Try to replace the powersupply, abnormal voltage sometimes causes this problem, memory and motherboard errors can cause your PC hangs up or blue screen but will not shut off.

Your computer is overheating, it is shutting itself down to prevent damage to the internal components.
Your computer should be serviced by a computer technician. He/she will clean the components and chassis of dust. This will increase airflow over the components, meaning your system will be stable and will not shut down unexpectedly.
Well in the system Bios or setup there are options where you can have the computer turn itself on automatically at a certain time. However, the fact that yours is turning itself on and off seems to indicate that it is either over heating or it is running into an issue when trying to boot and it keeps recycling the boot process. There is an option that you can set that will turn off automatic restart on boot. Turn off the computer and then turn it on and start hitting F8 repeatedly until you see Safe Mode as an option. Scroll down through the options and you will probably see an option that lets you stop automatic restart on boot, and take it if it is there. This will allow you to actually see the error message that is causing your computer to reboot itself.
When does it shut itself off? Is this happening time you press the power button and during the boot cycle it shuts off without completing the boot to windows? If it shuts down after you've worked on it for a while it could be that it is running hot. If you let it sit a while to cool off then press the power button, if it completes the boot cycle and allows you to work it is definitely running hot. Normally when they run hot if you immediately try to reboot, it will fail. If you let it cool off it will boot successfully. Computers run hot because of a fan not working, dust clogging the fan vents or the Thermal Paste around the CPU and Heat Sink has become hard or too thin to keep the unit cool. If it's not running hot you might have a power supply or motherboard issue. Try removing the power cord and press and hold the Power Button for 30 seconds to release any Static Buildup. Then plug the power cord back in and try to reboot.
In Windows XP
Click Start
, All Programs
, Accessories
, System Tools
, System Restore
. Select a windows restore point from a time when the computer operated properly, and then restart the computer.
In Windows Vista or Windows 7
Click Start, type restore
in the search field, and select System Restore
from the list. Select a windows restore point from a time when the computer operated properly, and then restart the computer.
If
the computer does not boot into Windows, you can restore the computer
settings to an earlier point in time. Turn on the power and press f8
. On the Windows Advanced Boot Option
screen, select Safe Mode
and boot into Windows.
Update Windows, the BIOS, and HP device drivers
Try to do a compleate power drain:
1)Shut down the computer completely
2)Unplug all the external devices like Printer/Scanner/Webcam/USB devices
3)unplug the power cable from the wall outlet, without the powercable plugged in try to press and hold the power button on the tower for 10sec. By doing this if there is any static power accumilated on the motherboard will drain off.
4)Try to turn on the computer, while the computer turns on keep hitting F8 on the keyboard/select safemode with networking option/if the computer boots on safemode and still says Installing windows leave the pc untouched for the windows to install. If not do a system restore.. which will take your computer to the previous working condition.
Sounds like something to do with a power saving feature either from HP itself or from Windows. It could also be that for some reason your computer is overheating, which it than shuts itself off to protect the processor. I would try playing with your power saving features, and cleaning out the fans.
Start the computer in safe mode (tap F8 immediately after turning it on until you see the option of how to boot)
If it successfully boots into windows, you have an issue with either driver conflicts and/or viruses. If it still restarts itself, you most likely have a hardware issue (bad hard drive, motherboard, etc)
when you turn on the pc keep pressing F8 and it will boot into safe mode.
When in safe mode highlight the option 'Last Known Good Configuration' and press enter.
The pc should now reboot normally, if not you will need your installation cd to do a system repair.
