I didnt have the color issues until i changed plugs because i was having sound issues first after i switched plugs an update pooped up and after i downloaded the update the color has been only black and white and i am still getting sound feed back

Hi this problem usually happens if you have got alot of things plugged into the telly like dvd players this causes the interferance and can be solved by disconecting these other items.
Also are you plugging it into the telly via scart lead or are you using the av leads ie the different coloured ones.
If you are using scart fitting have you tried pressing the av button on the telly controll as if you are not on the right av chanell this will cause black and white pictures so give it a try also this is the same with the coloured leads let me know how you get on.
Make sure their is nothing in the conector at the ps3 end like a biit of paper or fluff as this can cause all sorts of problems and dont use your ps3 on carpet as it will cause unit to get to hot and will cause parts to overheat and will need replacing check all air vents are free from dust and make sure its on hard surface if the unit has overheated it will cost a fortune to repair

Hi happy new year after what you tell me it sounds like it has deffinately overheated at some point this is difficult to repair as it could be the whole board that needs replacing this is also an expensive repair and most repair shops wont sell parts as they can make a fortune on the labour it will probably cost nearly as much as it did to buy new.
Have you had it long or not is it still under warranty or has this ran out usually go wrong just after warranty runs out.
When you switch it on can you hear the fan working and feel the fan working by putting your hand over air vents.
I know its to late now but sony dont tell you this but you are nit suposed tp place them on carpet or anything that has heat source as the fans inside them are only just powerfull enough to keep the ps3 cool anyway.
This is a really common problem with all ps3 i have managed to sort parts where i live in the uk but it is difficult.
I have repaired a couple of peoples ps3 with similar problem and it was a case of putting a new fan in and thus did solve the problem.
I wouldnt advise taking the unit apart yourself as it could get damaged further.
Just have a listen and see if the fan is working or not if its not working then replacing this could solve the problem.
The cable box must have caused the ps3 to overheat.
Parts are hard to come by and are not cheap and it also depends on where in the world you are.
Sorry has been a while but have been ill in hospital soz

Screen went black but sound still works.

What kind of input are you using? If you are using 3 cables (white, red, yellow, then possibly your white and red (sound) are still plugged in but the yellow (picture) cable has come lose on the back of the TV or on another machine it is feeding from such as a DVD player or other equipment.

Take a flash light and point it close to the screen . do you see a picture.

You have a bad back light or inverter the powers the back light. in any rate here the unit will need a repair shop because these are hard to get to you have to dig.

let me know ether way/

Either the cable or the port it plugs in to is defective, niether of which should be expensive to repair. Obviously the first thing to try is a replacement cable.

Hope this helps,

Do you have it hooked up straight to your tv or is it hooked into a System Selector? Your cables might be going bad, or what ever you have cables plugged into is going bad.
