Question about LaCie 500GB d2 Quadra 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Installed on MAC, then Plugged it to PC, now MAC won't recognize Drive

I installed my Lacie D2 Quadra on my MACBOOK PRO 17" and have been using it for months. Everything has worked great. I downloaded a large file and wanted to transfer it to my PC. I thought I could just use it like a jump drive and plug it into my PC and download the file. The PC opened a Wizard and I went through it. When it asked me if I wanted to Format it, I said no! Then I assigned it a Drive letter. I then realized, it wouldn't work with my PC. I plugged it back into the MAC and it doesn't see it now. I tried repairing it and re-initializing it, but it still won't see it. What do I need to do, to get my MAC to recognize it again and salvage all my files on it??

Look into Disk Warrior...its a hundred bucks, but it is a miracle worker of sorts and might fix everything for you.
the frustrating thing about DW besides its $100, is it takes less than a minute to fix problems I would fret over for weeks

Doesn't work

am not so sure if this is a similar issue with iomega2_bing.gif external drive in which the drive wont show up on My Computer but when the external drive was plugged into an ubuntu machine the drive was being detected and working just fine.

Please try to do the same. plug your external drive to an ubuntu machine and lets see if it can be detected. If it is then the hard disk has a similar issue with iomega drives. check this link for the solution.

I need to be able to use this hard drive on my pc

DataViz makes a product called MacDrive7 that can be installed on a Windows PC that will enable it to use pretty much any kind of device that has been formatted for a Mac. The other option would be to format the drive for a PC since a Mac can utilize PC formatted disks, but you will lose options like forks, etc that are Mac-specific.

LaCie d2 Quadra drive... not showing up on PC after working on a MAC

You need to make sure the drive is formatted for the PC. The Mac will read and write to a FAT32 partition, but the PC cannot see a Mac formatted drive as you have seen.

The only problem is that there is a 32Gb limit per partition for FAT32 drives.

It's not ideal but it's the best you can do easily.

Lacie Drive making awful noise!

Lacie D2 drives in my experience are infamous for not having the most durable bridge boards. The bridge board is a chip that has a chipset on it which take the SATA or PATA connection and send it to the USB and or Firewire ports on the enclosure. If the drive is powered up, you should get a blue light on the front. When connected to either mac or pc ( porsches are MS_DOS formatted out the box ), if it does not mount or does not appear in DISK UTILTY, then it is a high probability that the enclosure/bridge board has failed and the drive ( if not making grinding, buzzing, clicking or beeping sounds) will have to be extracted and placed into a more stable enclosure. If the drive is grinding like you say, most likely the disk is physically damaged. If this is something you experience often, maybe you should consider power conditioners. if the drive is being moved around alot, you should be gentle with it in transit. Drive enclosures, look rugged and have flashy lights and metal enclosures, but should be treated like babies. Drives are feircely sensitive. They should be padded, kept away from magnets, and treated like laptops. Hope this helps.
