Question about Canon ZR85 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Tape Will Not Come Out

When on my tape will not advance or rewind. Also it does not come out. When opening the eject hatch the cartridge starts out then automatically retracts back in the camera. Canon wants $180 to fix it. Have any suggestions? I am an electronics technician so I feel confident about making a repair after troubleshooting.

Firstly try this link, it has all the info for your camera, downloads, etc.

I am trying to find a schematic for it so you can pull it apart, but it is possible it cannot be resurrected.

Remember that dv camcorders are now quite cheap, so don't spend too much time and effort. But then I know I'd want to have a go as well, so have fun.

If this is the type that has the screws where you can get to them, I would try to take off door so you can see the mech's lock and see if any tape is causing it to jam. Sound like some foreign object is causing door not to open properly. Hope this helps.

If the cover is not opening at all and you are using the a/c power pack to it and not battery, then you will have to take door off to get to inside where you can manually take the tape or door mech apart to get out, but before putting back in any tape, I would try to open and close door by itself a few times. try to find out what is jamming door also, maybe tape or dirt, etc.

Hi fleet, If your tape will not advance, rewind, and it wont come out i pretty sure its stucked, (maybe you inserted it wrong, somthing got stucked or it fall when the tape was in.)

First lets try somthing that will not make things worse for sure.
Try pressing the open button while your camera is up-side-down. Also try it side ways. If the cover dosent open, let me know.

Eject lto5

in the manual should be something like this:

Manually Removing a Tape Cartridge
If problem-determination procedures identify the tape drive as the source of the problem and you are unable to eject the tape cartridge using the eject button, reset the drive to recover the cartridge:
Press and hold the eject button for 10 seconds, then release.
The status light turns amber and the drive starts through its hardware test process.
When the hardware test completes, the status light turns green.
If a cartridge is in the drive the status light flashes green until the cartridge is rewound.
The status light turns solid green when the rewind is complete and the tape drive is ready.

Although it is from an older LTO version, it must work on the newer versions too.

I also did remove tapes, if nothing worked, but it is to much to tell and show here.
NOTE: Allow at least 10 minutes for the rewind process to complete.

Cannot get tape to eject

It could be a couple of different issues. These things could help.
(1) Power OFF the camera, remove battery then replace the battery, power up the cam and try to eject tape again. Nothing? try...
(2) Gently press inward on the tape cover with both thumbs a few times. Then, while pressing gently inward with one hand, press the release/eject-tape function until you hear a click or release sound. Then, if it doesn't open automatically, gently "help" open the hatch.

If it remains stuck, after follwing these steps a few times it would be my guess that perhaps the camera has been dropped in a way that jammed the mechanism controlling the eject function.

TIPS that may prevent having eject problems: When loading tape, be sure to insert the tape correctly and slowly, makeing sure the tape is placed properly. Gently press on the specific location indicated to close the tape holder, and wait for the tape to "seat" properly before closing any other part of the tape cover or hatch mechanism. Taking a few extra seconds when loading the tape can save extended frustration later.

Hmm, since this is a later model, I'd guess, they might have skimped a bit. If you haven't already contacted the manufacturer, I'd suggest replacing the unit. Barring that, you may wish to see what's happening with the mechanism for ejecting. One VCR I opened up had a very clear problem that a built in piece of the mechanism was blocking the tape from lifting, and it had never done that before, and it served no clear function, other than keeping the tape from ejecting. Something may be occurring likewise when you press play.
If you are not very gifted mechanically or electronically, there are some TV repair companies that staff persons who can repair VCRs, and that could solve all these problems, including the rewind problem.

My Drive will not eject the tape

Turn off the tape drive. (Switch in the back of the unit. Wait 2 minutes and then turn unit back on. Tape drive should issue a write data command and then rewind the tape. After rewind completes the tape should eject. If it does not eject after rrewind completes than try holding the eject button for 5 seconds to attempt a "force eject"

Note: Do not repeatedly press the eject button as this can cause damage to the tape and the tape drive.

VCR eats tape when rewinding

A couple of possibilities: 1. Braking problems: When VCR goes from FFWD, REW, Play to stop, there are a pair of "brake pads" engaged to stop the reels, and prevent tape spillage out into the machine. These pads, often rubber like, are on levers which contact one side of each reel. If you take the cover off the VCR, and look down where the tape is loaded, you will like see these brake assemblies. If the rubber pad is missing, or lever pivot points gummied up, then this is your issue. 2. Take up reel isn't being engaged to take up the tape on tape eject. When a tape is loaded into the machine, tape is pulled from the cartridge and threaded into play ready position. When eject mode is engaged, the tape must be pulled back into the cartridge, or you will have tape hanging out the front end of the cartridge, and may get caught on the VCR internals, or at least be mangled by the cartridge door. The often issue here is likely the idler assembly pivot point is sticky. This idler pivots, moving from the take-up reel (right reel) to the supply reel reel (left one), depending on what mode is selected. FFWD & play to the right, left for REW. If this idler is gummed up at it's pivot point, movement will be sluggish at best, and might not be engaging the right reel quickly enough to pull tape in before tape eject. This idler is sitting right between the reels down where the tape sits. A little light oil on the pivot point may be enough to loosen it up. Otherwise it might need to be removed and the old grease removed, and a drop or two of light oil applied.
