Difficulty in booting computer

If by "shuts down" you mean the power turns off, you have a hardware problem. If you are running from the battery, the battery may need replacement; otherwise, the problem is more serious and should be brought in to a repair facility.
If you mean something else, please clarify further; specifying the actual model of Apple computer under discussion would really be valuable.
