- The first thing to check on an AC induction motor is to see if it is getting proper voltage. If ok, then look for a phase shifting capacitor if equipped (motor will not start, but hum loudly if the capacitor is bad). If it doesn't hum, then suspect a faulty relay or solid state equivalent. If the motor is rated for 230 volts, not 115 volts, check for 230 volts at the power socket (read with a voltmeter across the two slanted slots.
