My Dell Vsotro 1000 has a constant red battery

Depending on the age, the battery could just be expired. Even Lithium Ion batteries are subject to a limited amount of cycles - most have given up the ghost by 12-18 months of usage - battery life can be shortened by leaving the notebook constantly plugged in - batteries need to be fully discharged and then recharged every once in a while (weekly is best) in order to maintain the best health.
