Re: Tuner roams

If the picture is roaming as you say then check to see if you have 33 volts on one of the pins of the tuner. If not this will trace across almost the whole board to a resistor: some models will be 39k and other will be 27k. May be (don't remember exactly) R106. Anyway there will be 130 volts on one side and 0 on the other. This feeds the tuning voltage to the tuner 33 volts. I have seen it where the picture is not there at all and sometime I have seen it as you say sort of roaming off frequency. Hope this helps

I think your problem is in the tuner, a metal box located near the antenna input. This tuner can be removed and serviced. Sometimes the tuner DC supply line is unstable due to a filter capacitor or zener diode generally rated 33V (most common) and should be the first step in troubleshooting process.

This is a common symptom of tuner trouble. A common problem is bad solder connections inside. As the set warms up, small cracks on joints from the tuner circuit board to its metal case can cause the trouble you describe. If you tap on the TV or wiggle the connector where the antenna or cable line goes, the picture will sometimes pop back in if this is the case. It's also possible the tuner has parts that quit working as they warm up. The only way to know for sure is to remove the tuner, check over the connections, repair any that are iffy, and see if the trouble continues. This is not a repair for a do-it-yourselfer, though, because of the soldering involved.

If the trouble isn't bad connections in the tuner, there's not much you can do. I've checked the parts sources I use. The original Toshiba part is no longer available and I haven't found any replacement. If you're using a cable box or other video source, you can keep using the TV just for its AV inputs and not worry about the tuner any more. Otherwise, given repair labor cost and lack of parts, it's probably more economical to replace this TV instead of trying to repair it.

Sounds like you have bad solders in or around your tuner ***`y .Try knocking on the cable input while it`s working, this might confirm bad solder or cable connector. In case of bad solders you can take the cover off, the tuner will be right at the end of that connector and mounted on the circuit board . The bad solders are often on the p.c board itself . If you feel handy with a soldering iron you can resolder the tuner on the board, otherwise you might need the help from a local repairman. In any case you will know what is going on
Hope this will help Good luck

Is the VCR going through ch 3 or video inputs - if video inputs your TV tuner is likely bad if through ch 3 seeif te picture goes funny on ch 3 without using the VCR the tuner may be bad on higher band channels - smetimes you can remove the tuner and resolder the tuner itself. But if it always works with the VCR just use it that way and don't bother with the fix.
