Re: Illegal Operation

Hi, windows 98 is a very old system, most game disks wont work on 98's.
It may be a compatibility problem.
Check the back of the cd case to see if it can run on 98's.
Have a great new year.

Re: Illegal Operation

Hi, sounds like you might have a faulty part in the pc, ie memory or hard drive etc. if you have already installed windows from scratch on the pc and your still getting these faults i would say its the memory or hard drive is faulty..

Have a good new year

Win 98 in dos mode i get this message " no cd rom or msdex.exe is not loaded " when trying to acces game disk in cd rom

1) Does it say MSDEX.EXE or MSCDEX.EXE?

2) Have you ever used that CD successfully on that computer before? (DVD's don't work well in MS-DOS).

3) Verify its trying to run from the correct drive. D:, E:, etc...

That aside, I'd recommend a glance at the following support page. It sounds like your driver isn't supported or your game is referring to a specific drive that doesn't exist.

(make a back-up copy your autoexec.bat, and rename it autoexec.bat.orig just in case)
Get an older compatible driver for your CD-Rom that is windows 98 compatible, so something around the year 2000 is probably ideal.
Uninstall your current driver and reboot. Scan for Hardware changes and install the new drivers for your CD-ROM. Then check your config.sys and verify the driver. If its not correct, open the autoexec.bat in an editor. in the portion of the autoexec.bat that has MSCDEX..exe program you'll put in the following. (replace DRIVERNAME with the driver name, typically MSCD001)

Save, reboot. Let me know how it goes!

System Recovery for Compaq laptop

Using recovery disks from another model is NOT wise as this will install drivers irrelavent to the hardware in the problem laptop and cause major issues and a lot of things wouldnt work.

When laptops are purchased, they have a software utility to create your own restore disks. The best way to do what you need to do is download the media to install windows again (NOT illegal since your laptop already has a legal key), but make sure the version of windows is exactly the same as what it came with, then reinstall it and download drivers from compaqs site relevant to your model.

Also check for a recovery partition, goto my computer, see if there's a second harddrive called "recovery" or something similar, if there is one, restart the machine (backup everything first to external media), look for an option to hit a key for boot menu (ususally F11, F12 etc), and hit that (you wont get much time to hit the key!) then it will give the option to choose the boot media - choose the recovery partition and follow the prompts from there.

Hope this helped!

You will need to buy an original Windows 98 (or newer, such as Windows XP) installation disk and Certificate of Authenticity with 25-digit registration key, then use it to reinstall Windows on the laptop. Nothing from your home PC will do this for you, unfortunately. You can probably find a Windows 98 installation disk fairly cheaply on the internet.

No 3d acceleration in Vista on ATI 7500

Well, I'm amazed a C640 runs Vista at all. There's no reason to buy a new hard drive, except for the novenlty of having one loaded with Vista on a C640. It's a great laptop, and runs Windows XP PRo perfectly well. If you have one od the Dell XP install disks, just boot from it, and whenever it finds the vista install, hit excape, then at the next screen hit "D" to delete the partition, then choose "quick format", and load the Operation system. If you need an install disk, let me know. Good luck
