Did u have a check engine elight? had you just recently gased up?, u may have had some water in the fuel, i would have a Autozone parts store test the system for trouble codes, tell them u need an OBD 2 test run, it is free, if anything is failing it should have set a code in the cars computer.

You have to find the reason the check engine light is on. This will aid in diagnostics. Also, are you buying fuel at the same place both times?

If it's blue smoke, your burning oil. Get the head gasket checked. If that's ok your looking at something more serious, (more expensive), inside the engine.

Ford Contour apparently starves for gas, dies.

tell your mechanic to replace the fuel filter. This part is usually less than $10. It should be replaced aout every 50K miles.

The car died and won't start.

check the fuel pump relay first for a diagram of this you can get one from the dealership or autozone and if you can spray some starter fluid in the throttle body and the car starts and runs till it runs out it is more then likely your fuel pump
