Question about Dell Dimension 4600 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Motherboard I have been having a problem with my 4600. On startup, my disk drive leds are flashing amber and green, my monitor is black, and there is no power going to the keyboard, or so it appears seeing how the led light does not come on on num lock or caps lock. I have contacted dell support and the gentleman I spoke to narrowed the problem down to be either the POWERSOURCE or MOTHERBOARD. He then informed me the only way to differentiate between the two would be to purchase a new powersupply from dell spare parts dept and if that does not make a difference I should go ahead and purchase a new motherboard. My problem now is, I don't know what the motherboard looks like or how to remove it my self to replace it. Same goes for the power supply. I am trying to keep the cost down by doing this myself. Can you help me out?

Re: motherboard

Ya definetely....i will help u out in solving the problem.

first of all open the side cover of the i am first instructing you how to check the power supply in the system..

as soon as you open the side cover of the cabinet the remove all the wires coming to the motherboard from the powersupply.then there u can see a 20 pin connector coming to the motherboard from the that bunch of 20 wires shot the green colour wire and the black colour wire...and give the power to the powersupply. if its ok and the fan of the powersupply is working then the smps is ok other wise u need to get it repaired by giving it for chiplevel servicing.....

if powersupply is ok then check whether there are any burns on motherboard if so and even if not u need to give the motherboard for chiplevel servicing.....

My screen is going black when I turn it on.

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive
Test the leads that attach to your ((hard drive from the motherboard)) or replace all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your ((motherboard to hard drive))
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

hope this helps

When my Computer turn on the system Giving message "Monitor is going to sleep mode" and then I am not getting any display, but the system is on.

Monitor is not getting a signal from the computer. Ensure the cable connections are correct. If the monitor has a input select option, ensure it is set for the cable option selected.
If tower is a Dell, ensure the power LED on the Tower is Green/Blue If flashing Amber, power supply may have failed, solid amber, motherboard or a device connected to it may have failed.

Amber light flashing on switching on the pc why?

A blinking amber light means that there is a problem with the power supply or the motherboard. I know that could be a number of things. Perhaps you could give some additional information.

1) Does the green light come on on the motherboard?
2) Do any/all of the fans work? Power supply or computer cooling.
3) Do you get any other lights? CD/DVD player?

You may have to get someone to see if your power supply outputs are all good.

I hope that gives you some starting points.

Thanks for using Fixya.

I have a problem with my dell vostro 200. There's an orange light on the power button and an orange LED on my motherboard which prevent normal display on my monitor. What can I do to solve it?

The power LED if it is flashing AMBER, then the power supply is failing. If the LED is Solid AMBER then the motherboard, or something connected to the motherboard has failed (Video Card, Modem etc)

Screen will not come on hard drive light no light checked power supply is ok

Things to check:
  1. Power led on the front of the tower, it should be solid green when on. Flashing Amber is generally an indication of a bad power supply inside the tower
  2. Power LED Solid AMBER indicates system is not finishing the power on self test (POST) and you remove all connections from the tower except power and try turning on again. If no change, remove all PCI and PCI-E cards from system, try again, no change replace motherboard.
  3. On the back of the tower are 4 diagnostic LEDs near the ps2 ports marked ABCD, after the POST, during a normal boot the will flash in several sequences and with boot is finished all 4 should be green. If they stop an a different pattern, then that indicates a failure Yellow Yellow Green Green indicate bad RAM for example
  4. If the LEDs on front and back are Green then the system appears to be booting but the monitor display is not functional

Computer will not turn on

  • Blinking Amber/yellow: Initial state of LED at power up.
Indicates system has power, but the POWER_GOOD signal is not yet active.
If the hard drive LED is off, it is probable that the power supply needs to be replaced.
If the hard drive LED is on, it is probable that an onboard regulator or VRM has failed.

Dell wont start up

On the back of the chassis, there are 4 LEDs above the PS2 connections marked ABCD what do they indicate? During the boot process the lights normally flash on and off green, when the boot process is complete, they should all be green GGGG.

If any are Amber then they are indicating a power on self test (POST) failure. AAGG is bad memory for example.

Post the indications

Monitor and Mouse not working

GGGA indicates that the power on self test completed successfully.

GGGG indicates that the had off from the BIOS to the Windows Operating system was completed.

If you are not getting any video, and have an expansion video card, reseat the card. If you still don't have video, remove the card, and connect to the motherboard integrated video port (May have a black plastic cover on it)

LED trouble lights

the led lights you see is actually a diagnostic light which has an equivalent meaning there should be actually 4 led lights you see is it a yellow green green green pattern and this is at the back of your computer? if that is the case it could be an indication that there is a device inside your computer that is malfunctioning. you will have to strip down your computer. remove all that is connected to the motherboard (hard drive, cdrom, memory, expansion card if any) disconnect the mouse, keyboard and monitor as well. should you hear a beep or the light changed at the back it means your motherboard is good and the absence of memory is being reported by the beeping sound. try to connect the device one by one
now if you are referring to the light at the dell logo infront it is just a monitoring light to indicate if your computer is turned on and the right side light is whether your hard disk is doing an activity
